May
8, 2001 Yeah,
you've guessed it. We've
been watching DVDs and writing more DVD
movie reviews. This time, we have three new reviews to add: Reindeer
Games: Exclusive Director's Cut, All The Pretty Horses,
and Rocky: Special Edition. On
our Upcoming
Releases page, we added quite a list of new DVD title
announcements: Beyond
the Law (5/22), The Fugitive: SE (6/5), Essex Boys
(6/12), Hard Core Logo (6/12), Obsession (6/26), The Body (7/3),
Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her (7/10), The Great Muppet Caper
(7/10), The Gift (7/17), Saving Silverman available in
PG-13 rated version or separate R-rated version (7/17), Once Upon A
Time In China III (7/17), Carrie (8/28), Dressed To
Kill (8/28), Audrey Rose (8/28), Candyman 2: Farewell to
the Flesh (8/28). For Marilyn Monroe fans, May 29 marks the
debut of The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefers Blondes,
How to Marry a Millionaire, There's No Business Like Show
Business, and Bus Stop. Then, Buena Vista Home Entertainment
announced a slate of new titles for later this year: The Book of
Pooh: Stories of the Heart (7/17), Recess: School's Out
(8/7), Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (8/28), Dumbo:
60th Anniversary Edition (10/23), Disney's Whispers: An
Elephant's Tale (10/23), Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in
at the House of Mouse (11/6), Recess Christmas: Miracle on
Third Street (11/6), Mickey Mouse in Living Color (12/4), Disneyland
USA (12/4), Silly Symphonies (12/4), and Davy Crockett (12/4).
Buena Vista Home Entertainment also confirmed that Chocolat
will release on August 7. Rumor
has that Pearl Harbor (which debuts theatrically this Memorial
Day holiday, May 25) will be released to DVD on December 4, in time
for the 60th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack (December 7,
1941). That would
make sense, right? The movie stars Ben Affleck and Cuba Gooding
Jr. and should be a pretty big blockbuster hit this summer.
We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear anything official. Oh, and remember, Mother's Day
is this Sunday, May 13. Have a good week, everyone.
April
24, 2001 How
is everyone doing? Had a nice Easter holiday? Relieved
that your income tax returns are filed? Yeah, we know exactly
how you feel. (Big sigh of relief.) Well, with our
patriotic duties out of the way (for now), we have been at again:
watching DVDs and writing more DVD
movie reviews. This time, we have two new ones to add: Almost
Famous and Ghost. On
our Upcoming
Releases page, we added a whole bunch of new DVD title announcements:
Jet Li's The Legend (5/8), Best in Show (5/15), Uncommon Valor (5/22),
Dungeons and Dragons (5/22), Shadow of the Vampire
(5/29), The Karate Kid (6/12), The Karate Kid, Part II
(6/12), The Karate Kid, Part III (6/12), The Mask of Zorro:
SE (6/12), Proof of Life (6/19), Save The Last Dance (6/19),
State and Main (6/19), The Pledge (6/19), Charlotte's
Web (6/19), Dogma: SE (confirmed for 6/26), Thirteen
Days as New Line Home Entertainment's new infinifilm series
(7/3), The Wedding Planner (7/3), Higher Learning
(7/3), The Last Dragon (7/3), Bruce Lee's The Chinese
Connection (7/3), Return of the Dragon (7/3), Game of
Death (7/3), Fists of Fury (7/3), Indian in the Cupboard
(7/3), Disney's first Platinum Edition Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs (10/9), and Jim Carey in Dr. Suess's How the Grinch
Stole Christmas! (11/20). Yes, Universal announced that last
title for November 20 with a press release today. I know, I
know, the Christmas holiday selling season isn't for another six
months. A
couple of notes are in order for the release dates announced
above. First, New Line Home Video has changed their name to New
Line Home Entertainment, to reflect the fact that the home
entertainment industry is more than just "video" (as in VHS
releases). More importantly, New Line is introducing their new infinifilm
series, beginning with the Thirteen Days DVD release on July
3. These infinifilm series will even better their already
jam-packed Platinum Series. We're always excited to hear
news concerning a studio trying to up the ante of value-added bonus
material for DVD releases. Good going New Line Home
Entertainment! We can't wait to review Thirteen Days. Second,
Disney is introducing their awesome Platinum Edition DVDs
with this fall's release of the classic Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs on October 9. From what we understand, Disney plans
to release one Platinum Edition DVD title each year for the next ten
years. We also heard a rumor that next year's release may be Beauty
and the Beast. Wow, we can't wait to see what Disney packs
in their Platinum Edition DVDs. There's much to look forward
to... We hope that we would hear future announcements from the other
studios along these same lines. Now
for a release date adjustment: Snatch is postponed from
6/12 to 7/3. Then for the juicy stuff, we heard some rumored
release dates for Chocolat (7/24), Disney's The Hunchback of
Notre Dame II (8/14), Hannibal (8/21), Pokemon 3: The
Movie (8/21), Spy Kids (9/4), The English Patient:
Special Edition (sometime in 2002), and of course Disney's Beauty
and Beast: Platinum Edition (Fall 2002, see the paragraph
above). Note, these are all rumors. And
finally, but certainty not least: this weekend (April 28 to be exact)
marks our one year anniversary on the web as TimeForDVD.com.
And guess how we're celebrating this weekend? Go ahead... we'll
give you three guesses. April
11, 2001 We've
been busy again watching some good movies and writing reviews on
them. Check out our latest DVD
movie reviews: Rugrats in Paris: The
Movie, Keeping the Faith,
The Legend of Drunken
Master, Remember the
Titans, Men of Honor, Finding
Forrester (releases on April 24), and The Right
Temptation. There are some really good movies in this
bunch. Here
is a listing of some new titles on our Upcoming
Releases page:
Norma Rae (4/17), A Midsummer Night's Dream (4/17), Great
Expectations (4/17), Before Night Falls (5/22), Forever Mine
(5/22), Big Trouble in Little China (5/22), Cast Away
(6/5), All Revved Up (6/12), IMAX The Dream Is Alive
(6/12), IMAX Blue Planet (6/12), The Claim (6/26), The
Cotton Club (7/24). We're particularly excited about Cast Away, the
mega-blockbuster hit starring Tom
Hanks. This 2-disc Special Edition DVD title comes with THX Surround EX and
DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 surround
sound. Sweet, indeed. And
now for some juicy rumors, and what could be more juicy than a street
date for Episode 1? Ah yes, the latest rumor
is that Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace is coming on
October 16, 2001 as a 2-disc special edition. Also, The
Godfather trilogy is rumored for release 4th quarter of this year
as a 4-disc set (with the fourth disc dedicated to bonus features).
We'll keep you posted of any official news. Happy
(early) Easter, everyone!
March

If
you missed out on last night's Academy Awards® or if you're
wondering which Oscar winners are available in the DVD-Video
format, check out our summary of
the 73rd Academy Award winners and a listing
of titles that are currently available on DVD-Video and dates for those that are coming soon to DVD-Video. We've
been working hard (yeah, right) and completed the following DVD
movie reviews: The Little
Vampire, Toy Story 2-Pack
(finally!), The Rock: The
Criterion Collection, The 6th Day,
Charlie's Angels, Space
Cowboys, and Bedazzled.
There's some really good movies here! As we mentioned before,
Bedazzled is the first ever NUON-enhanced
DVD-Video title. If you're not familiar with NUON, read our quick
reference on NUON. On
our Upcoming
Releases page, we added a few new DVD title announcements:
Billy Elliot (4/17), The Muppet Movie (6/5), The Muppets Take Manhattan
(6/5), All The King's Men (6/5), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (6/12).
Just a note, the Antitrust: Special Edition DVD is delayed a
week to May 15. And,
it looks like our transition to a new web server has successfully been
completed.
March
20, 2001 We
have to move our web site to a new web server over the next few
days, so you may experience some anomalies with our site during this
time. Hopefully, this will fix some of the persistent problems
that we have been experiencing, like the site being down
intermittently throughout the day. If everything does well, out
site should be back to normal before this weekend. Remember...
don't forget to watch the Academy Awards this Sunday night.
Go "Gladiator"!
March
12, 2001 As
parents of younger children ourselves, we were excited to find out
that Big Idea Productions is
releasing its next VeggieTales
title, Lyle,
the Kindly Viking, on DVD (same day and date as the
VHS). The DVD will include as bonus material an exclusive
interview with VeggieTales creator and the title's
director, Phil Vischer. This marks the first VeggieTales title ever to
be released on DVD. For those of you who are not familiar with VeggieTales,
it is a series of videos for children ages four and older featuring the
lovable vegetable characters in their musical song-and-dance
numbers. Not only will these computer animated characters
entertain the youngsters, they will also teach them various values
that are rooted in Christianity. This title features a lesson in
sharing. In the last couple of years, these VeggieTales
have gained popularity with the mass market as well. We're
excited that Big Idea Productions is beginning to release these
wonderful titles in DVD. They are also considering the prospects
of releasing previous titles to DVD as well. We'll keep you
posted on further developments. [Editor: Read
our review.]
Today,
we have a couple of new DVD
movie reviews for you: Lucky
Numbers starring John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow, and Buddy
starring Rene Russo. On
our Upcoming
Releases page, we added the following new DVD title announcements:
VeggieTale's Lyle the Kindly Viking (3/27), Pay It Forward (5/1), Quills (5/8), Beautiful Joe starring Sharon Stone
(5/22), That Thing You Do and Bachelor Party starring
Tom Hanks (6/5), Two Girls and a Guy (6/5), and The Legend 2
with
Jet Li (6/5). On
January 10th, we had announced that Rocky
is being released in both a standard edition and a special
edition. Well, the latest news is that the standard edition DVD has been cancelled, while the Rocky: Special
Edition DVD has dropped in price from $24.98 to $19.98, while
maintaining the same bonus features. That's probably the better
way to go anyways. Along with Rocky: SE, Rocky II through IV are
still being released in box sets.
March
5, 2001 We
hope you still have time for DVD, 'cause they're some good titles among those we recently reviewed, not to mention some
upcoming titles later this Spring that is worth waiting
for. The ones we recently reviewed are listed on our DVD
movie reviews page: The
Fantasticks, Lost Souls,
Jackie Chan is the Prisoner, Wonder
Boys (releases on March 13) and The
Contender (releases tomorrow, March 6). Our favorite
pick of this bunch is easily The Contender from DreamWorks
Pictures. It's a smart political thriller that should not be
missed
by anyone.
On
our Upcoming
Releases page, we added more exciting DVD title announcements:
Frank Hebert's Dune 2-disc set (3/20), Powderpuff Girls (4/3),
Panic (4/24), Backtrack (4/24), Extreme Prejudice

Limit (5/22), Unlawful Entry (5/22), The House of Mirth
