What's new in DVD, home theater, and our site

This site is a Region 1 (U.S. and Canada) resource for DVD movies.  Check out our DVD Upcoming Releases page for DVD release dates of current theatrical movies.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We are no longer updating this page.  You will find the same information on our home page, under the heading "What's New".

July 26, 2001

Upcoming Releases.  We just added more DVD titles to our Upcoming Releases page: Driven (9/18), Crocodile Dundee (9/18), Crocodile Dundee II (9/18), Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (9/18), Mission Impossible & Mission: Impossible 2 DVD 2-pack (9/18), Rugrats The Movie & Rugrats in Paris: The Movie DVD 2-pack (9/18), Along Came A Spider (9/25), The French Connection (9/25), Tales from the Darkside - The Movie (9/25), Michael Flatley Gold (10/30), Feet of Flames (10/30), and Doctor Zhivago (11/6).  Bridget Jones's Diary is delayed from September 18 to October 9.

The Latest Rumors.  The latest rumors have Lara Croft: Tomb Raider coming out in fourth quarter, and a number of this year's blockbuster movies that may still be released in time for the Holidays: Final Fantasy, Jurassic Park III, A.I., Dr. Doolittle 2.  DreamWork's Shrek looks like an early November release.  And finally, since E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial may see a theatrical re-release early 2002, the DVD may not come out until late 2002.

Latest DVD Movie Reviews.  If you want a break from the usual Hollywood fare, give Malèna a try.  If you're into a superb, smart, mystery-thriller, don't pass up on The Gift.  Check out these and other reviews our DVD movie reviews page.

Innovative DVD packaging.  The Total Recall: Special Limited Edition and Basic Instinct: Special Limited Edition we mentioned above for release on September 18 are both from Artisan Entertainment.  For these releases, Artisan is using some really innovative and unique packaging designs.  We've never seen anything quite like it.  These cases are "out of this world" and will definitely "stick out" on DVD rental shelves and retail space.

Panasonic DVD-RV31, click here to read our full reviewPanasonic DVD-RV31 DVD player review.  On the hardware front, we recently posted our review of Panasonic new DVD-RV31 DVD player.  As this year's new entry-level model for Panasonic, this $200 (retail) single-disc DVD player can playback CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and can decode MP3s.  We were expressed with its combination of features, performance, and value, so we are recommending the DVD-RV31 as an "excellent value" in the entry-level DVD player category.  So, if you're in the market for a new DVD player, be sure to check out our full review.

Have a good week, everyone.
