Stereo SACD (2-channel
original DSD
recording)
CD hybrid layer (PCM)
Summary: This SACD is another superb musical
performance by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
Kunzel selected a number of unforgettable and emotionally-moving Broadway
show tunes and exerted his mastery as a conductor in this heart-pounding
performance. I immediately took to a few of my personal favorites
such as Les Misérables suite and the contemporary He Lives in
You from the movie The Lion King. But after only a few
listening sessions, I found many new favorites and pretty much enjoyed the
entire SACD, from the first to the last track. If you like Broadway
show tunes, we're willing to bet that you'll enjoy this collection and
performance by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops. Highly recommended.
Recording: Telarc continues its practice of
releasing some great recordings in the SACD format, and this 2-channel DSD
recording by Michael Bishop is no exception. The transparent
recording lends a realistic, "you are there" feeling with just
2-channels. Everything is well rendered during playback, from the
opening piano notes from Seasons of Love and Ragtime, to the
airy feel of the string section, to smoothness in the midrange as the horn
section played, to the full of orchestral weight and visceral impact of
the percussion. Delightful!
Tracks: Smokey Joe's Cafe (On Broadway),
Miss Saigon (suite: The Heat is On in Saigon, Why God, Why?, The Last
Night of the World, Bui Doi, This is the Hour), The Lion King (He Lives in
You), The Secret Garden (Lily's Eyes), City of Angels (Your Nothing
Without Me), into the Woods (Children Will Listen), Kiss of the Spider
Woman (Gimme Love), Les Misérables (suite: AT the End of the Day, I Dream
a Dream, Master of the House, Bring Him Home, Do You Hear the People
Sing?), Rent (Seasons of Love), Ragtime (Ragtime), Jekyll and Hyde (This
is the Moment), The Scarlet Pimpernel (Into the Fire), Grand Hotel (The
Grant Waltz), Big (Cross the Line), The Life (Hookers' Ball), Will Rogers'
Follies (Give a Man Enough Rope), Titanic (The Latest Rag, Godspeed
Titantic)
Extras: 12-page booklet (7 pages describe
the artists, the rest describes the SACD format and
this particular recording)
