.1-channel: refers to the low frequency effects channel of a 5.1-channel or 6.1-channel surround sound format.
1.33:1 aspect ratio: refers to a screen that is 1.33 times wider than it is high. This is equivalent to a display that is 4 units wide by 3 units high. See 4:3 full frame/aspect ratio and our Aspect Ratio page.
1.78:1 aspect ratio: refers to a screen that is 1.78 times wider than it is high. This is equivalent to a display that is 16 units wide by 9 units high, or commonly known as "widescreen TV". This screen aspect ratio is part of the HDTV subset of Digital TV. See 16:9 widescreen/aspect ratio and our Aspect Ratio page.
1.85:1 aspect ratio: refers to a movie screen or widescreen movie picture that is 1.85 times wider than it is high. See our Aspect Ratio page.
2.35:1 aspect ratio: refers to a movie screen or widescreen movie picture that is 2.35 times wider than it is high. See our Aspect Ratio page.
4:3 full frame/aspect ratio: refers to a screen that is 4 units wide and 3 units wide (i.e., 1.33:1 aspect ratio). This is the aspect ratio of conventional analog television screens. See our Aspect Ratio page.
5.1-channel: refers to surround sound formats that use five channels ("5" designation) of full frequency sound and one channel (".1" designation) for low frequency effects (LFE). Examples of 5.1-channel surround sound formats are Dolby Digital and DTS. Read our Surround Sound primer.
6.1-channel: refers to the new Extended Surround sound formats, such as THX Surround EX and DTS-ES 6.1 Matrix, that has a back surround channel to fully realize 360° surround sound. Though the DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete is the only true 6.1 surround sound system.
7.1-channel: refers to A/V receiver manufacturer's often proprietary algorithms to fill in the two new back surround channel speakers.
10-bit digital/analog (D/A) converter: refers to a digital-to-analog converter, with a 10-bit word length digital-to-analog converter and operating up to 27 MHz processing speed.
16:9 widescreen/aspect ratio: refers to a TV screen that has a 16:9 aspect ratio, or DVDs that are published in 16:9 aspect ratio.
