Summary: Disney’s Treasure Planet is one of the studio’s feature full-length animated film for 2002.  It combines the old world wonder and fascination of pirates and stolen treasures with the futuristic setting of an intergalactic spaceport in the distant future, complete with strange alien lifeforms.

As a young boy, Jim Hawkins loves stories about space pirates for their adventures and treasures.  As a young man, he has strong mechanical inclinations, creating his first space sailboard at an early age.  He sails for sport and tries to help his single mother with her inn, but he dreams of a life of adventure.   When an alien crash-lands one night near the inn, Jim tries to save the alien, but it is too late.  The alien asks him to watch over a mysterious spherical object and warned him to keep it away from the Cyborg.  With his mechanical abilities, Jim discovers how the spherical object works.  It turns out to be a map to the legendary Treasure Planet, where the late legendary pirate stashed all of the worldly treasures.  Needless to say, Jim is overjoyed with excitement.  He wants to find the treasure to prove that the legend is true, and to bring back a handful of the riches to help his innkeeper mom make it through the rough times.  His mom reluctantly agrees, even with coaxing from the trusty Doctor Doppler.  So Doctor Doppler and Jim hire a ship of the their own and set off in search of the legendary Treasure Planet.

Treasure Planet brings a number of good values to young children: friendship, loyalty, trust, and courage.  The storyline is strong and coherent, with good character development, but can be a little slow at times.  Morph, a mystical character that can take any shape or form, provides much of the comic relief.  His character supplants the traditional role of talking parrots in pirate movies of yesteryear.  Visually, this modern piece of computer and hand-drawn Disney animation is dazzling in some key scenes.  There are lots of scenes with impressive 3-D flybys.  The surround sound mix envelopes the viewers in the excitement and action.  Treasure Planet falls short of the really big Disney feature animated films of the recent past, but it is a worthy film for Disney fans.

Special Features: visual commentary by the producers and directors; two deleted scenes and an alternate ending; "RLS Legacy: Virtual 3D Tour and Treasure Hunt" featurette with Technical Tour, Nautical Tour, and Treasure Hunt; "DisneyPedia: The Life of a Pirate Revealed" featurette; "Disney's Animation Magic: Hosted by Roy Disney" featurette; "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)" music video performed by John Rzeznik of The Goo Goo Dolls; Behind the Scenes with Story, Art Design, The Characters, Animation, Dimensional Staging, Merging 2D and 3D Worlds, Music, and Release featurettes; Sneak Peeks of Finding Nimo, Brother Bear, Atlantis: Milo's Return; Stitch: The Movie; Bionicle; The Lion King: Special Edition DVD; George of the Jungle 2; Castle in the Sky
