Summary: "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her" is a deep drama about the lives of seven very unique women.  The film is a snapshot study of each of these women.  We are thrown into their lives to experience contemplation of motherhood, spiritual emptiness, searching for romance, grievance for a dying lover.  Though the drama is deep, the crawling pace of the movie left me quite restless.  Performances were good, but honestly, I failed to identify with most of these characters.  It's worth a rental if you're into slow moving dramas with deep character studies.  Seriously, I think this film will no doubt appeal to some audiences, but it didn't work for me.

The Story

"Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her" stars big-name, award-winning Hollywood talent such as Holly Hunter, Glenn Close, Calista Flockhart, Kathy Baker, and Cameron Diaz.  With all this star power, you would think the movie would be a huge hit.  Well, that was my going in assumption.  I thought I was in for a treat... a deep, meaningful, and entertaining "chick flick".  Well, yes but mostly no...

The story is about seven very unique women in different stages of life.  The lives of these characters are nicely interwoven with each other, as you realize by the end of the movie.  One is searching for true love but never seems to find a man that would take her seriously.  Another is not actively searching for love, but the love of her life unexpectedly finds her in the most unlikely of places, the hospital morgue.  A third woman, a single mother of one, is searching for a new romantic beginning with a new neighbor who seems unlikely to be her type.  A fourth is a successful career business woman, at the top of her profession, dealing with the option of motherhood when her casual affair leads to an unexpected pregnancy.  A fifth woman is struggling with spiritual emptiness as she cares for her aging mother and is desperately seeking male companionship.  The sixth woman is struggling during the last few precious days of life with her dying lover.  And the seventh woman?  I leave that for you to find out.

These big stars give wonderful dramatic performances.  That goes unquestioned.  However, the flow of the story is very slow and deliberate, to the point of leaving me restless during much of the movie.  Though any and all of these women could be real-world human beings in real-world situations and predicaments, I found it hard to identify with most of these characters.  While I am sure that some audiences will enjoy this deep drama, it didn't work for me.  It simply failed to enlist my empathy and compassion.

The Extras

"Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" DVD comes with nothing but the original theatrical trailer.  Pretty sad, I must say.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is very good.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced and has a clear dialogue track.
