Summary: Columbia TriStar releases The
Sweetest Thing to DVD in two versions: an R-rated theatrical version
and a unique unrated version with additional "unrated"
footage. I review the unrated version here, but I don't really know
which scenes were added for the unrated version, but I would guess it's
those scenes where my mouth dropped in disbelief. I don't think
we're talking about gratuitous nude scenes. Rather, it's the
explicit and uninhibited sexually oriented humor.
Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair
star as three single professional women in search of the perfect "Mr.
Right Now". Cameron Diaz is the wild and carefree Christina,
who never lets herself get hurt by avoiding emotional attachment at all
costs. Christina Applegate and Selma Blair are Courtney and Jane,
Christina's roommates. The three women offer each other
unconditional support and friendship. When Jane is dumped by her
boyfriend, Christina and Courtney takes her to the most exclusive night
club in town to get her mind off her misery and have some casual
fun. Jane does well for herself in the nightclub, while Christina
unexpectedly stumbles onto Peter (Thomas Jane). Their meeting is a
disaster, but something sticks in Christina's mind and she can't get Peter
off of her mind. Going against all instincts and her own rules of
engagement, she embarks on a road trip with Courtney in search of this
mysterious man that captured her attention. This road trip turns
into a series of mishaps and misadventures that will have you laughing
hard and shocked in disbelief.
The Sweetest Thing is somewhat
misnamed. It's not your typical romantic comedy date-night movie,
especially for those of you who don't yet know each other very well.
There's material here that could certainly offend as the movie is jaw-droppingly bold
with its numerous explicit sexual references. It's more of a
fraternity or sorority house type of movie. It's definitely wild!
Special Features: This set of bonus features
are unique to the unrated DVD release: audio commentary by director and
cast; "Politically Erect" behind-the-scenes featurette; "A
Day in the Life of Nancy M. Pimental" (writer) featurette (quite
interesting!); storyboard comparisons; never-before-seen footage
subtitled; theatrical trailers; production
notes; and DVD-ROM link to The Sweetest Thing web site
