Summary: Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster gave Academy
Award winning performances in this powerful and riveting psychological
thriller about the search for a serial killer. This is the movie that
started it all. Before you enjoy the sequel, "Hannibal",
make sure you catch "Silence of the Lambs", which incidentally I
think is the better of the two. This DVD features a superb
high-definition transfer that begs you to watch this movie again, while the
bonus materials tantalize you to add it to your DVD collection. Bon
appetit.

The Story
"Silence of the Lambs" is the movie that
introduced us to the notorious Dr. Hannibal Lecter (a role in which Anthony Hopkins
earned an Academy Award for Best Actor),
cannibal and psychologist extraordinaire. It also introduced us to the
Clarice Starling (a role in which Jodie Foster earned an Academy Award
for Best Actress), a FBI
trainee who is recruited by Dr. Jack Crawford of the FBI to interview
and administer a questionnaire to Dr. Lecter that would help profile the
killer in the Buffalo Bill serial murder case. Though Clarice is still
finishing up her studies to graduate into full "special agent"
status, she shows remarkable knowledge, insight, and judgment in her dealings with Dr.
Lecter. Hannibal on the other hand, takes an immediate fancy to the young
and attractive trainee. He shows remarkable interest in Clarice's
psychological background, offering to trade his knowledge of Buffalo Bill for
insights into her personal background.
"Silence of the Lambs" is an awesome
psychological thriller. As such, it can be pretty gruesome and is not for the faint-hearted.
Those that are not squeamish will be treated to stunning performances by the
awesome acting talents of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. The movie
is gripping, shocking, and daring. This is as good as psychological
thrillers get. If you like "Silence of the Lambs" (which
you'll almost certainly will), be sure to
catch the sequel, "Hannibal".
The Extras
As a Special Edition DVD, "The Silence of the Lambs"
comes with the following bonus features:
-
"Inside The Labyrinth" documentary includes
all-new interviews with the cast featuring Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster
and more! This is a must-see segment that runs just over an hour of the
cast and crew discussing topics from the book to screenplay, finding a
director, casting actors, training, locations, and set design.
Basically, this segment answers all the questions you ever want to know
about the making of "The Silence of the Lambs".
-
20 minutes of deleted scenes which consist mostly of
extended or angle change of scenes included in the movie. Director
Jonathan Demme
made the right choice to eliminate these 22 scenes.
-
Original 1991 "Making-of" featurette runs
about 8 minutes and features director Jonathan Demme, Anthony Hopkins,
and Jodie Foster.
-
Anthony Hopkins' phone message is spooky, hair raising
experience.
-
Never-before-seen outtake reel is short but great fun
to watch Anthony Hopkins imitating Rocky, and I didn't know Jodie Foster
could swear!
-
Photo gallery (118 photos)
-
Collectible booklet (7 pages) is a summary of how
"The Silence of the Lamb" comes about.
-
"Hannibal" and "The Silence of the Lambs"
theatrical trailers and 8 TV spots
Video & Audio
The image quality of this new high-definition anamorphic
widescreen DVD transfer is very good, especially considering that the
film is 11 years old. The colors are accurate and
saturated, while shadow detail is good. I am very pleased with the DVD
transfer. The re-mixed Dolby
Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced, though the surround sound
channels are not used very much. The dialog is consistently clear.
