Summary: Tom Cruise stars as the chief of a
Precrime Unit, a futuristic task force, in this Steven Spielburg science
fiction thriller shot in the style of film noir. In the year 2054,
the Precrime Unit uses a controversial new technology that identifies
future murderers before they commit their crimes. The astounding new
technology allows the Precrime Unit to apprehend the murderers moments
before they commit their heinous crimes, saving the lives of the victims
and tax payer's money from long drawn-out criminal trials.
"The fact that you've
prevented it from happening
does not change the fact that it was going to happen."
Thanks to the nature of this technology and the
success rate of the elite Precrime Unit, the homicide rate for future
Washington D.C. drops to absolutely zero for the six years of its
experimental fielding. Does it sound too good to be true?
When the Precrime Unit technology predicts that its
chief will commit a murder, against someone who he doesn't even know,
everything turns upside down for the chief as he attempts to run from the
system. Strangely, all the men and women that served under him is
now out to arrest him before he commits his murder. And now that he
is the fugitive from the system, will the chief realize his pre-destined
fate as a murderer, or does he still have a choice to realize a different
future? Is the Precrime Unit technology perfect in its
predictions? Between all the heart-pounding action sequences, the
viewer is drawn into the issues relating to this intriguing philosophical
problem. Few directors can successfully realize a feature length
movie based on this concept. Steven Spielburg is one of those few
directors. And as a movie, Minority Report succeeds on all
counts.
The video quality is top notch, as it brings out
the cold, monochromatic cinematographic style. The film noir style
is an interesting new twist for such a blockbuster film. The special
effects used to portray the ultra futuristic world are dazzling. The
surround sound is no less awesome as it employs a
DTS surround sound option. As a
two-disc DVD release, fans will find much bonus materials to satisfy their
most insatiable appetite for supplemental and behind-the-scenes
featurettes.
