Summary: Tim Allen stars as Joe Scheffer,
your basic "nobody" in the world. At work, Joe is a mellow-mannered,
dedicated, and overworked company man but is frequently passed up for
promotions. At home, he is a single dad who is trying to raise a 12
year-old girl. When he takes his daughter in for daughter's day at
the office, he is bullied in the company parking lot over a parking
space. Slapped down in front of his daughter, Joe loses his dignity
and stays home for the next few days regressing. After a few days,
he administers some self advice and coaching and decides to take a crash course in martial arts to beat the company
bully in a re-match. In the workplace, he begins to earn acceptance
from fellow coworkers and gains popularity in the
office due to his underdog status. His self-confidence rises and his
life, in both professional and personal realms, begins to turn
around. Will Joe go through with the
show down? Or will he realize what is important in his life and make
the right decision.
The lessons portrayed in this movie applies to
people of virtually any age, from middle childhood to middle adulthood,
though the specific circumstance of a physical fight is somewhat juvenile
in my mind. I guess the thought of two professional men dueling it out
in a work environment seems quite preposterous. Also, I thought that
Joe's relationship with his 12 year-old daughter was not as well developed
as I would have expected. And even though Joe Somebody is a far cry from one of Tim Allen's big
blockbuster comedic successes, this movie does sport enough charm and
humor that would make
it a nice romantic comedy to enjoy as a rental.
