Summary: "Ghost" is one of the best movies of all time -- an absolutely must-see.
With heavy doses of passionate romance, heart-felt drama, pulse-quickening
thrill ride, and upbeat comedy, this film has all the elements for a perfect movie.
"Believe..." in the power of love and the afterlife.  As much as I personally love
this movie, I found the video quality to be a little disappointing.  The picture
exhibits excessive grain and softness in a few scenes, marring an otherwise
good DVD transfer.  If you're one of the many die-hard fans of this wonderful
film and can overlook this slight shortcoming, it's a worthy DVD to add to your
   collection.

The Story

Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is an up-and-coming investment banker who has just moved in with his girlfriend, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), to a new apartment.  He's finally got everything he has every dreamed of: a career that is on track, a beautiful girlfriend who adores him, and a cool apartment.  Molly wants more.  She's ready to commit to marriage.  However, Sam is fearful of losing what he has today and doesn't want to change anything, at least not yet.  When Molly says "I love you" to Sam, Sam replies with a simple "Ditto".  One night when Molly and Sam walk home after seeing an opera, they are mugged in a dark street.  Sam is fatally wounded in the struggle after the assailant backs hand Molly in the face.

Because of his sudden death, Sam's ghost is in shock and lingers on earth as he sorts out his life and figures out how to protect Molly from further harm.  It seems that the assailant is after something very specific.  During his pondering, Sam comes across a fortune teller, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), who has a gift of being able to hear ghosts, including Sam.  Sam's encounter with Oda Mae is hilarious, thanks to Whoopi's natural and bright comedic talents.  Sam convinces Oda Mae to visit Molly so that he can tell her how much he misses her, that he loves her, and that she's in grave danger.  When Oda Mae approaches Molly, it isn't easy to convince Molly that she has supernatural powers that allows her to communicate with ghosts.  During this time, Sam also encounters a ghost on a subway train who teaches him a valuable skill of physically moving physical objects in the real world.

Will Sam be able to convince Molly, with the help from Oda Mae, that her life is still in grave danger?  Ah, if you haven't watched this movie, you're in for a real treat.  Do believe and do watch this movie.  There's many good reasons that it is the highest grossing film of the year in 1990.  Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore gave excellent performances, and their on-screen chemistry ignites the screen with love and passion.  Whoopi Goldberg is magical with her comedic delights and breathes a comedic perspective into this supernatural tale of passionate romance and gripping mystery.  This is one of the very best movies ever made.  Do not miss it.  Make sure you watch it in this lifetime.

The Extras

The DVD comes with an audio commentary with director Jerry Zucker and writer Bruce Joel Rubin, a retrospective featurette entitled "Remembering the Magic", and a theatrical trailer.  The 22-minute "Remembering the Magic" retrospective featurette is as it says, a retrospective of making the movie from the perspectives of director Jerry Zucker, writer Bruce Joel Rubin, Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg.  The featurette is quite entertaining as it relates the story of how writer Bruce Joel Rubin found out that Jerry Zucker (director of "Airplane") would direct his new screenplay, how Jerry Zucker initially objected to casting Patrick Swayze for the role of Sam Wheat and Whoopi Goldberg for her role of Oda Mae.  It's an honest and humorous featurette, as re-told first-hand by those "guilty", and it's very well worth watching even if you're only renting the DVD.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is somewhat disappointing, even considering that this movie is eleven years old.  The picture exhibits excessive grain and softness in a number of scenes, though shadow details are fair.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective, and the dialogue is crystal clear.  The surround channels are particularly effective during the supernatural scenes.  Overall, the video presentation leaves something to be desired.  I find this somewhat troubling, especially knowing that many die-hard fans of this film will sink their hard-earned money into this less-than perfect DVD transfer.

Recommendation

I highly recommend this movie, but I can't quite say "ditto" for the picture quality of this DVD transfer.  Like I said, the picture quality leaves more to be desired.  The bonus material are pretty basic in terms of quantity and quality -- nothing exceptional, considering the suggested retail price of $30.  If you've seen this movie and are considering adding it to your collection, factor in the less-than-perfect video quality into your buying decision.  I realize that many die-hard fans of this mega- blockbuster hit will probably still want to pick up a copy anyways.
