Summary: Drumline is a story about a
very talented snare drum musician, Devon Miles (Nick Cannon), who is at the top
of his game in high school. For his talent, he is awarded a full
scholarship to Atlanta's A&T University (fictional). There, Devon is treated
as a freshman (rightfully so, perhaps), but his big ego and unrelenting
high self confidence frequently get the better of him, as he uninhibitedly
shows off his sheer talent to make the band, and then some. The band
director and his section leader both realize that Devon is a loose cannon
and that he needs to learn to play with the show-style marching band.
"One band, one sound."
Will they be able to tame him? Or is Devon's
talent and uncontrollable ego just too raw to be of any use in the band?
The band practice and competition sequences are delightful
and entertaining. You've gotta love the showmanship of these bands. I simply could not get
enough. Drumline is a fun movie for older teenagers as well
as adults. (In case you're wondering, I consider myself one of the
latter.) In more ways than one, it's quite an inspirational film
with its upbeat and uplifting messages on team work, dedication,
determination, education, friendship, and love.
