Summary: Antwone Fisher is a stirring
drama based on the true story of the man by the same name. He is an
enlisted man in the U.S. Navy who has an attitude problem and manages to
get himself
into trouble with his fellow comrades and his superiors. When his
commanding officer orders him to see the base's psychiatrist for an
evaluation and recommendation, he does so reluctantly and stubbornly
refuses to engage in the psychiatric evaluation. When Antwone (Derek
Luke) finally opens up and shares his troubles with Dr. Davenport (Denzel Washington), we begin to learn the events of his childhood that
partially shapes the man that he is today. And through this exploration
of Antwone's youth, Dr. Davenport hopes to help
him take control of his own future.
This is a gripping drama, with remarkable performances
by Derek Luke and Denzel Washington. As
this is his directorial debut film, Denzel Washington did a marvelous job
with a relatively limited budget. Antwone Fisher delicately
touches on a number of society's less talked about problems, with a
powerful and thought provocative effect. This movie overflows with
story telling magic. And as a profound and intense drama, I highly
recommend it.
