The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (widescreen version)The first movie in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, won four Academy Awards for Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best MakeupThe Fellowship of the Ring will be released to DVD as early as August 6, 2002 as a 2-disc set in both full screen and widescreen versions.  Click here to read our review of this version.

Later on November 12, 2002, New Line Home Entertainment will be releasing two more DVD versions of The Fellowship of the Ring: a 4-disc set Special Extended Edition and a 5-disc set Collector's DVD Gift Set.

Widescreen & Full Screen Standard Editions

Except for the aspect ratio, the content for the widescreen and full screen standard editions will be exactly the same.  Here are the preliminary disc specifications:

  • theatrical version of the feature film (run time 178 minutes)

  • Full frame or widescreen (2.35:1 aspect ratio), as separate products

  • Dolby Digital 5.1 EX soundtrack

  • Stereo soundtrack

  • English subtitles and closed captions

Here are the preliminary information for the bonus features (on disc 2):

  • Exclusive 10-minute behind-the-scenes preview of The Two Towers

  • Three in-depth programs that reveal the secrets behind the production of this epic adventure, including:

    • "Welcome to Middle-earth"

    • "The Quest for the Ring"

    • "A Passage to Middle-earth"

  • Fifteen featurettes originally created for www.LordOfTheRings.net, which explore the locales and cultures of Middle-earth and include interviews with cast members Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler and others

  • Original theatrical trailers and TV spots

  • Enya "May It Be" music video

  • Preview of Electronic Arts' video game, The Two Towers

  • An inside look at the special Extended DVD Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

  • DVD-ROM content: exclusive online content

  • total of over two hours of bonus programming

But before you buy either of these versions, read on about two additional versions...

Special Extended Edition, 4-Disc Set (November 12, 2002)

Here are the specifications for the Special Extended Edition:

  • Extended version of the feature film, with over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage created for this release and spans two discs (discs 1 & 2)

  • Dolby Digital EX soundtrack

  • It will most likely be R-rated (due to what reason we're not yet sure)

This Special Extended Edition contains the following bonus features on discs 3 &4, with more than six hours of added content:

  • Details are not yet available, but New Line says the extras "will plunge the viewer into the complex landscape of Middle-earth, and reveal how Peter Jackson and his team of skilled artists and technicians created a painstakingly beautiful, and faithful re-creation of Tolkien's world."

  • Certainly, we think it will include everything from the August 6 release

  • Check back in August-September timeframe.  Hopefully New Line will provide more details then.

Collector's DVD Gift Set, 5-Disc Set (November 12, 2002)

In addition to all the features listed above with the Special Extended Edition, this 5-disc Collector's DVD Gift Set will include:

  • Special box art packaging conceived and design by famed Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee

  • Custom bookends designed and sculted by Sideshow Weta (the artist that crafted the theatrical visual effects for The Lord of the Rings)

  • Exclusive, collectible Decipher game cards

  • 5th disc featuring National Geographic "Beyond the Movie" DVD (previously released by National Geographic as a standalone product), which also contains two featurettes and a photo gallery

The Lord of the Rings: The Sequels

The sequel entitled The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers will be released to theaters December 18, 2002.  We expect this sequel to be released to DVD in late summer or fall of 2003.

The third episode, called The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, will be released to theaters Christmas 2003.  We expect this third episode to be released to DVD in late summer or fall of 2004.
