Summary: "What Lies Beneath" is a very riveting supernatural thriller that will
make your heart pound as it drowns you in a tub-full of thrills and chills.  If
you're into supernatural thrillers, this movie is guaranteed to make you jump
and scream.  The excellent video and audio quality (particularly with the DTS
5.1 digital surround sound) further maximizes the thrilling effect.

The Story

A happily married couple is now able to re-discover themselves as husband and wife when their daughter goes away to college.  Norman Spencer (Harrison Ford) is a researcher at his father's college and is developing a new serum which he hopes to present at an upcoming conference.  Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the beautiful, loving wife who misses her daughter to whom she had devoted her life.

As if the adjustment to an empty-nester lifestyle isn't enough, Claire is also concerned with the new next door neighbor's loud quarrels and the subsequent mysterious disappearance of the new neighbor.  It's been about a year after her serious car accident, which occurred shortly after moving into Norman's father's estate which they're still renovating.  With all this stress on top of struggling without her daughter, Claire starts to hear voices, receives hidden messages, and sees what seems to be a ghost.

All the while, Norman is deeply engaged in his research at the university, trying to complete the paper that he hopes to present shortly.  When Claire tells him of her unnatural experiences at home, he thinks that she is starting to lose grip on life and encourages her to see a psychologist.  We'll leave it at that so you would enjoy the rest of the movie.

It is amazing that Claire can deal with all these supernatural signs without breaking down mentally.  I would just of get out of the house permanently after the first few signs of ghosts.  "What Lies Beneath" is a great supernatural thriller that will make your heart pound, drain your strength, and drown you in non-stop chills and thrills.  For fans of supernatural thrillers, this movie will definitely make you jump and scream.

The Extras

"What Lies Beneath" Special Edition DVD comes with a modest amount of extra material, which includes: an audio commentary by director Robert Zemeckis, producer Steve Starkey, and director of photography Don Burgess, a "Constructing a Thriller" behind-the-scenes featurette, production notes, cast and filmmaker bios, and a theatrical trailer.

The riveting 15-minute "Constructing a Thriller" behind-the-scenes featurette is particular insightful and compelling as it tells of director Zemeckis' movie making career along with superstars who had worked in many of his movies.  What's amazing is the amount of visual special effects incorporated into this film.  I didn't notice them during the film, but some of the camera angles required use of visual special effects.  How cool.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is very good during the bone chilling scenes.  The "What Lies Beneath" DVD comes with both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.  While both soundtracks are well balanced and effective, the DTS 5.1-channel digital surround sound is sensational.  In either soundtrack version, the dialogue is clear and the chilling musical score greatly enhances the mood of the movie.

Recommendation

DreamWorks' supernatural thriller, "What Lies Beneath", is riveting and comes with a tub-full of heart-pounding thrills and chills.  If you have to use the bathroom during the movie, make sure you check the tub first.
