The Story
"A View To A Kill" is the fourteenth among the current nineteen Bond adventures, all of which are now available in the DVD-Video format. The latest James Bond Collection Volume 3 came out on October 17, 2000, of which "A View To A Kill" is a featured title. (By the way, you can buy the James Bond box sets, or each title in the set individually.)
In this episode, Roger Moore returns in his last performance as James Bond, agent 007. This time, he retrieves a hardened computer microchip from agent 003 in Siberia. This mission makes for a great Bond pre-opening credit stunt spectacular. After a briefing from Q about hardened computer microchip technology, Bond sets out to investigate how the Russians are able to get the same hardened computer microchips. As he investigates further, he realizes that an industrialist is plotting a scheme to control the computer microchip market.
In his quest to find the truth, Bond takes us on an adventure around the world. Continuing the Bond film legacy of beautiful on-location cinematography, "A View To A Kill" was filmed in the Swiss Alps and Iceland (simulating Siberia), the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.
The 38-minute "Inside A View To A Kill" original documentary is very entertaining and informative. It talks about the casting process, the challenges of performing certain stunts (particularly parachuting off the Eiffel Tower), the setback due to the complete destruction of the "007" stage at Pinewood Studios, the dedication ceremony of the newly re-constructed "Albert Broccoli 007" stage, and the use of elaborate miniature and full-scale models for visual special effects.
The 21-minute "The Bond Sound -- The Music of 007" documentary takes you through the history of the music behind the James Bond series. It begins with Shirley Bassett's performance of the theme of "Goldfinger" (she also sang the "Moonraker" theme), and continues with Nancy Sinatra singing "You Only Live Twice", Carly Simon singing "Nobody Does It Better", and Sheena Easton singing "For Your Eyes Only". The documentary also credits John Barry's contribution to the success of the Bond series. It ends with a wonderful acoustic guitar solo of the James Bond theme. You can't help but keep humming the James Bond theme.
The audio commentary with director John Glen and various cast and crew members is very informative. Most of the commentary is narrated by a designated (third-party) commentator with commentaries from John Glen and the cast and crew interjected in during appropriate segments. Among other things, John Glen and his colleagues talks about scouting for locations and shooting on location, costume design, how the visual special effects were performed, and how well cast members got along.
The
never-before-seen deleted scene shows James Bond being bailed out of a
French jail. It's quite funny so I don't want to ruin it for you.
Once again, MGM succeeds in its objective to package value-added extras to each of
the James Bond Special Edition DVDs. Good going, MGM.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is generally good. The colors are accurate and saturated. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is heavily concentrated on the front channels. The dialogue was clear, and wonderful music score effectively engages the viewer in the action and excitement of this film.
Recommendation
For DVD and 007 fans, October 17, 2000 was a milestone. On this date, all nineteen James Bond movie titles became available on DVD-Video. The James Bond Collection Volume 3 includes A View To A Kill, as well as five other titles: The Living Daylights, Octopussy, From Russia With Love, Diamonds Are Forever, and You Only Live Twice. Each title making up the three-volume set is a Special Edition and features unique documentaries of the Bond legacy. To fellow Bond fans, I will say that this DVD is a worthy addition to your DVD collection.
