Summary: "The Untouchables" is an intriguing look at the Prohibition-era in which
mob warlord runs Chicago and innocent people live in fear of their lives because
the politicians, justice, and law enforcements are bribed to look the other the way.
The government sends federal agent Ness to investigate and bring peace and
justice to the city.  With exceptional performances by Kevin Costner, Sean Connery
and Andy Garcia, this is one of my favorite mobster movies of all time.

In the 1930's during the Prohibition era, the mob kingpin rules Chicago and owns practically all politicians, justices, and law enforcers.  Citizens live in fear and innocent people die because they happen to be in the wrong place.  To put a stop to the mob, the government sends federal agent Elliot Ness (Kevin Costner) to investigate the Prohibition violation and put a stop to mob violence.  Ness is married, has a daughter, and has another child on the way.  As a newcomer to Chicago, Ness is arrogant and confident that he can bring down the mob warlord Al Capone (Robert De Niro).  During his first liquor raid, he discovers that Capone has his people everywhere and has to withstand the humiliating consequence.

At his lowest point, Ness accidentally meets Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), a street cop with sensibility and survival instincts.  Determined to bring peace and justice back to Chicago, Ness recruits Malone to form a team with a sharp shooter cadet, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and a federal accountant (Charles Martin Smith).  Malone teaches Ness to shoot to kill, and to shoot first if he wants to beat the mob.  With Malone's connection and mentorship, Ness is able to successfully confiscate liquor from Capone.  As the liquor raids continue, Capone vows to take down Ness and all who is connected to him.  With his family in hiding, he continues his dedication to bring down Capone, but at what price?  Amazing human spirit to fight for freedom, justice, and peace for all.

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound sounds good, but the surround channels were underused.  This is probably because the movie was never mastered in Dolby Digital.  Back in 1987, the film was probably released with just Dolby Surround.

With just a theatrical trailer, the DVD is quite expensive.  Unless you're a collector of organized crime movies, you may want to rent this DVD first.
