Summary: Director Schepisi did a superb job of bringing the play to the screen.
The story is about a con-artist, "Paul", posing as the son of Sidney Poitier who
intertwines his life with the wealthy urbanites.  Will Smith and Stockard
Channing both gave great performances, and their comedic chemistry is
undeniable.  This movie has a good mixture of drama and comedy.

The Story

Posing as a friend of the Kittredges' children, "Paul" (Will Smith) introduces himself to the art-dealing urbanites Ouisa (Stockard Channing) and Flan Kittredge (Donald Sutherland) as the son of Sidney Poitier.  He befriends them immediately by insisting that he cooks them a home-cooked dinner for them and their guest.  Ouisa immediately takes to Paul's charms and sophistication of worldwide travel with his famous father.

Certain things that are too good to be true usually don't last long.  Paul's plan begins to unravel as the Kittredges and their friends discover that the same "Paul" has been pulling similar stunts of being mugged and needing help.  The Kittredges confirm their suspicion with their children.  Shocking as it may be, the Kittredges' involvement doesn't end there, but takes a series of unusual twists and turns that will change their lives forever.

There's a lesson for all of us here.  We learn not to be fooled when someone walks up to us and claims to know us or our family.  This movie has a good play on the pretentious and wealthy urbanites.  You'll be laughing out loud because the comedic chemistry between Smith and Channing is undeniable.  This movie has a good mixture of drama and comedy.

The Extras

This DVD features a collectible booklet and the original theatrical trailer (which by the way has been edited to eliminate the male frontal nudity of Michaelangelo's 'Creation of Adam' to comply with the MPAA regulation).  The collectible booklet has the background of how the story came about, the making of "Six Degrees of Separation", and Stockard Channing's stage to screen performance.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this enhanced widescreen DVD is quite good.  Colors are accurate and shadow details are nicely captured.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is well-balanced and effective.

Recommendation

Will Smith is at his best conning these suburbanites.  Stockard Channing's stage to screen performance is riveting.  This movie may change our outlook of the world.  We hope that you'll enjoy it as much as we did.
