Summary: "Rules of Engagement" is an intense, gut wrenching military drama
about a peace keeping mission gone wrong
.  With 83 Yemen civilians killed
by U.S. Marines during the U.S. embassy rescue, the commanding officer and
the U.S. comes under world scrutiny.  Pressured to keep good relations with
the Middle East, the National Security of State strategically initiates a court
marshal of the highly-decorated commanding officer.  Chances are, you too
will be engaged in this drama about military and politics.

The Story

Terry Childers (Samuel L. Jackson) and Hays Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones) meet during officer training school but their friendship and loyalty strengthen when Childers saves Hodges' life in the 1968 Ca Lu engagement during the Vietnam war.  After the war, Hodges attends law school and graduates 67th of his class.  He continues with very limited success in his military law career, marriage, and life in general.  In 1996, he retires from the Marines while his friend Childers continues his career as a Colonel in charge of active combat units.

As one of the best Marines commander, Childers is ordered to Yemen on a peace keeping mission.  Unfortunately, the mission turns into a gut wrenching confrontation between the seemingly peaceful Yemen demonstrators and the U.S. Marines.  Childers orders his men to shoot at the demonstrating crowd.  Even after a courageous rescue of the Ambassador (Ben Kingsley), his wife (Anne Archer) and son, Colonel Childers is accused of breaking the rules of engagement in killing 83 unarmed civilians.

Mr. William Sokal (Bruce Greenwood), the National Security of State, wants to maintain relations in the Middle East and a quick and easy resolution to bring justice to the murder of 83 Yemen.  He appoints a young Stanford law school graduate (Guy Pearce) as lead counsel in the government prosecuting team.  The patriot and war hero Childers asks his friend Hodges to be his defense attorney.  Hodges reluctantly accepts as he and Childers together fight the hardest battle of their life to preserve the comradeship, courage, and heroism for themselves and honorable military men alike.

Both Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson gave awesome performances in this intense, gut wrenching drama.

The Extras

This DVD includes an audio commentary by director William Friedkin, a cast and crew interview, and a behind-the-scenes featurette.  The 13-minute cast and crew interview explains the real-world rules of engagement, re-telling of the storyline, talents of the cast.  The 23-minute behind-the-scenes featurette tells how the story was initially conceived, how the cast trained with real-world Marines in order to achieve credibility on-screen, how the film was actually shot on a Marines aircraft carrier, the use of a state-of-the-art camera system for aerial perspectives, the selection of the Morocco location instead of Yemen, and the documentary style of the cinematography.

Video & Audio

The image quality is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are excellent.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound is generally effective, though the dialogue was briefly difficult to hear in a few scenes.  The surround sound was incredibly effective during the helicopter scenes, particularly at about 17:31 (Chapter 3) when the helicopters seem to fly under the audience.  The soundtrack makes ample use of the low frequency effects (LFE) channel as well, making the battle scenes very engaging.

Recommendation

High caliber performance from Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson is unmatched in this tense and emotionally charged film.  This military drama with excellent trial scenes should not be missed.  If you like "A Few Good Men", you will definitely enjoy this movie (and vice versa).
