Summary: "Remember the Titans" is an inspirational and heart-warming movie
about friendship, team work, loyalty, overcoming racial prejudices and tension.
As a football-themed movie, this is the best I've seen since "Heaven Can Wait".
I warm-heartedly recommend this DVD for fans of inspirational drama and
football/sports-themed movies.  It's a good and wholesome entertainment for
   the whole family.

The Story

"Remember the Titans" is based on a true life story of Herman Boone and Bill Yoast of Alexandria, VA in 1971.  The public school board makes T.C. Williams High School the first racially integrated school in the area and assigns Boone (Denzel Washington) the head coach of the varsity football team of what was once a white high school team.  The former head coach, Bill Yoast (Will Patton), is nominated for the Virginia High School All-Star Hall of Fame for leading his team through fifteen winning seasons, but is demoted to assistant head coach of what used to be his team.  Humiliated by the demotion, Yoast plans to quit and move on, but when all of his players decide to sit the season out as a show of support, he decides that he would not let down his team.  Yoast accepts his new position as assistant head coach in order to get his team to play.

Boone takes the entire team to summer football camp in Philadelphia and along the way breaks down the resistance from his white team members.  After much discipline, hard practice sessions, and forcing the team members to integrate, the team learns to respect each others' differences and becomes a team.  After the football camp, the team comes back to the real world and realizes the world is still deep in racial tension.  Will the team remain united and set an example for the town of Alexandria?  It's quite inspirational to see this inter-racial bonding and male-bonding unfold in this wonderful screenplay.

As a true story of friendship, team work, loyalty, and overcoming of racial tension, "Remember the Titans" is a very inspirational and uplifting film.  It gives me a warm sense of hope for humanity to know that people can overcome their superficial differences, and how some key visionary coaches can be catalysts to such landmark changes.  The acting performances are consistently good from all members of the cast, including Yoast's feisty daughter, Sheryl (Hayden Panettiere).

The Extras

"Remember the Titans" comes with the following extras: two audio commentaries (one by director Boaz Yakin, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and writer Gregory Allen Howard, the other by real-life coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast), "Denzel Becomes Boone" featurette (talks about how Denzel takes on the role of the real-life Herman Boone), "Beating the Odds" featurette, the ABC special "Remember the Titans: An Inspirational Journey Behind the Scenes", six deleted scenes (most of which are good and could have been left in the movie; all are of finished film quality), a theatrical trailer, and sneak peeks at four upcoming movies and DVDs "Atlantis", "102 Dalmatians", "The Emperor's New Groove", and Disney's "The Kid".

The best thing about the bonus features are the featurettes that show the real-life Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, as they are true heroes of humanity, as evidenced in how they changed the outlook of the town, and how their team members move on to prominent roles in life (beyond football).  All-in-all, a very good set of bonus material, particularly for a standard edition title.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is very good.  The "Remember the Titans" DVD comes with both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.  Both soundtracks are well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear and the sound of the on-field tackles are bone-crushingly good.

Recommendation

I highly recommend "Remember the Titans" DVD.  Besides being a very uplifting and inspirational film that leaves us feel good about the human spirit, it is the best football-themed movie since "Heaven Can Wait".
