Summary: If you enjoy martial arts action movies, "Jackie Chan is the Prisoner"
delivers and actually has an interesting plot.  Even though the title seems to
imply Jackie Chan is the main character, he actually plays a supporting role.
Nonetheless, the movie features solid performances by Sammo Hung, Tony
Leung, and of course Jackie Chan.

The Story

When caught, criminals pay for their crimes when sentenced to prison.  But in this high security Hong Kong prison, life behind bars can be excessively dangerous due to the corruption of the prison officials and guards.  Andy is a police officer who is summoned by a Hong Kong police chief to secretly investigate some kind of corruption.  Upon his arrival, he spends some time reacquainting himself with the police chief and his girlfriend, who is the police chief's daughter.  Soon afterwards, they witness the shocking assassination of her father.  That night, Andy and a fellow detective establish a fingerprint match to a prison inmate who is supposedly executed in front of a firing squad in the Hong Kong high security prison.  Suspecting that something is corrupted and desperate to know who killed his girlfriend's father, Andy decides to go deep undercover as a prison inmate, without any police protection.

In another part of town, Steve (Jackie Chan) is a master billiard hustler who is commanded by a mobster boss to purposefully lose a match.  Refusing to lose the match, Steve and his girlfriend, Kiki, are attacked by the gangsters .  They stab Kiki who is now in need of a new liver.  In order to obtain a liver, Steve has to raise some quick cash and buy it on the black market.  Steve resorts to gambling to raise the cash, and gets catch in a tight spot with another crime family.  This time, he accidentally kills the brother of the mob boss Lee (Andy Lau).  Now arrested and with a price on his head, Steve heads to the high security Hong Kong prison and is immediately attacked by Lee's men on the inside.  However, Andy is able to save Steve during this first encounter.  But the battle of the prisoners' leaders are constantly in turmoil.  One by one, John (Sammo Hung), Lee, Steve, and Andy are executed in front of the prison's firing squad.  The surprise ending is a twist in the plot that is not to be missed.

As a martial arts action flick, this movie delivers.  Yes, there is some of that humorous Jackie Chan style martial arts action, but not as much as in other Jackie Chan movies.  Jackie Chan actually plays a supporting role in this movie.  I guess the marketing effort for this U.S. release is trying to sell this movie as a Jackie Chan centric movie, as evident in the American version of the movie title.  Be sure to stick around and watch the bloopers during the end credits.

The Extras

This DVD features the following extra material: audio commentary track with martial arts expert Phillip Rhee, talent files for the cast, and an original theatrical trailer.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is good.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is only fair as the surround channel was not frequently used.

I am disappointed with the fact that there isn't an original Chinese language audio track.  Sometimes the best way to watch a foreign film is to hear it in its native language track with English subtitles.  So I believe a native language track should always be available.  Fortunately however, the English dubbed track was well done.
