The Story
Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) thinks he can make a difference in the world by volunteering for the Vietnam War. As soon as he lands in Vietnam, he realizes that he may have made the wrong choice. The life of foot soldiers during the Vietnam War is especially torturous, frightening, and deadly. Private Taylor's war experience is further intensified by Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger) who endangers and complicates the experience of war for his own people. He is a merciless killer to the Viet Cong, but is also a threat to his own unit.
Serving under Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe), Taylor realizes that his leader has compassion for his troop and humanity for innocent war victims. The conflict of leadership and the constant life-threatening bombardment of fear during combat dehumanize some of the men and divide the troop into two factions -- merciless killers and defenders of human rights and truths.
Having
experience the war himself, director Oliver Stone did a fantastic job of
relating his war-time experiences. The tag line on the DVD's keep case, "The first casualty
of war is innocence", rings so true. Platoon is a winner of four Academy
Awards for 1986 Best Picture, Best
Director, Best Editing, and Best Sound.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this enhanced widescreen DVD is quite good, aside from the frequent dust particles on the film itself. Colors are accurate while shadow details are nicely captured. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel re-mixed soundtrack is well-balanced, making you feel as though you are right in the middle of the combat scenes.
Recommendation
I remember seeing this film for the first time about 14 years ago. It made such an impact and I've always remembered it to be one of the very best war films I've ever seen. The extra materials are quite scant for this title, but as one of the very best depiction of war, you cannot beat the experience of "Platoon". Fans of well-made war movies must add this title to their collection.
