The Story
IMF agent Ethan Hunt's (Tom Cruise) rock climbing vacation is abruptly interrupted when the IMF agency seeks him out to offer him an assignment to investigate the death of a Dr. Nekhorvich who is involved in making antidote for the deadly Chimera biological virus. His first mission is to recruit the beautiful jewel thief, Nyah Hall (Thandie Newton), to help him in his mission to stop terrorists from unleashing Chimera in the United States.
M:I-2 is a romantic action thriller. It raises the bar as far as action movies go. The stunts, action, explosions, and special effects are incredible. Did I say "romance"? I certainly did, M:I-2 storyline includes a strong romantic interest between Ethan Hunt and Nyah Hall, which was very well portrayed on-screen by Tom and Thandie. There's good chemistry between them.
Tom
Cruise was totally amazing in this movie. He co-produced the movie
with Paula Wagner, starred in the lead role, and most amazingly performed a
great deal of his own stunts. You cannot begin to appreciate the efforts Tom had put in until you watch the extra material on the
DVD. Since the first time I watched this movie on the big screen, I was
totally amazed with the rock climbing scene during the opening
credits. Tom Cruise was simply phenomenal. To his credit, Dougray Scott
did a fantastic job of playing the villain as he also did some of his own
stunts. I don't think any action fan will be disappointed by the awesome performances in this
intense, heart-pounding action movie. It is truly "mission
impossible".
The audio commentary with director John Woo is quite informative and entertaining. He talks about his excitement and apprehension in making a sequel to the original "Mission: Impossible". Once Tom explained to John that M:I-2 is a different type of movie than the first episode, John felt at ease. John wanted to make M:I-2 as a romantic, triangular love story with humanity, suspense, action, and adventure. The screenwriter then wrote the sequel along these guidelines. John discusses how various scenes were put together to achieve the suspenseful effect that he wanted to achieve with M:I-2. John also relates how terrified he was when Tom wanted to do many of his own stunts.
The 14-minute "Behind the Mission" featurette includes interviews with Tom Cruise, co-producer Paula Wagner, screenwriter Robert Towne, director John Woo, Thandie Newton, and Dougray Scott. They discuss the development of the M:I-2 storyline and the various inspirations that they incorporated into the film.
The "Mission Incredible" stunts featurette is a five-minute quick overview of the incredible stunts in the movie. It pays tribute to Tom Cruise's mountain climbing scene in the opening credit sequence and the final fight sequence. The 34-minute "Impossible Shots" featurette shows in detail how 11 stunts were produced, from choreography to the special equipment used in making and filming these stunt sequences. For action fans, this is quite a treat.
The "Mission Improbable" parody made for the MTV movie awards is simply hilarious. It is exceptionally well done and features prominent appearances by Tom Cruise and director John Woo. The alternate title sequence shows an alternative title sequence that was not used in the final film, though it is not drastically different from the final version. There is also a music video entitled "I Disappear" by the group Metallica.
The DVD also includes DVD-ROM features: agent dossiers (detailed information on the IMF agents), mission locations (an overview of each location and still pictures), Chimera data (details on the deadly biological virus), and tech tools (overview of the wonderful gadgets and devices used in the film).
Phew, I told you there's quite a bit a bonus material. The extra materials on this DVD should make just about anyone happy.
Video & Audio
The image quality is excellent. The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are excellent. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound is very effective. The soundtrack makes ample use of the low frequency effects (LFE) channel as well, making the action scenes very engaging.
Recommendation
"Mission:
Impossible 2" features a very high
caliber performance from Tom Cruise. As a romantic action
thriller, it is unsurpassed. I can't say enough of the good things
about the movie and its DVD. I think it's way better than the
first episode of "Mission: Impossible". In fact, it is a
"mission impossible" to even think that you would not consider
adding this awesome DVD title to your collection. So
"should you choose to accept this assignment",
"cruise" out and get
yourself a copy of the M:I-2 DVD. "Warning -- this DVD movie review will self destruct in five
seconds."
