Summary: Best-seller author Paul Sheldon drives to Silver Creek Lodge to write
his current book.  His life becomes endangered when his car spins out of control
and lands him on an embankment.  His number one fan, Annie Wilkes, saves his
life and nurses him back to life.  This is where the white-knuckle thriller begins.
Kathy Bates is one of my favorite actresses and she has outdone herself in this
psychological thriller.  Though the bonus material is very limited, this DVD is
worth consideration of chilling thriller seekers and fans of Stephen King.

The Story

Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is the famous, successful, and best-selling author of the "Misery" series.  However, he decides to end the series and goes to his Silver Creek Lodge to complete a new book.  On the way up to his lodge, Paul drives off the road during an unexpected blizzard and spins his car down a steep embankment off the road.  His number one fan, Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), finds his car wreck, rescues him, and nurses him back to health.

At first, she seems link a normal, caring person.  That is, until she finishes the "Misery's Child" book and realizes that Paul is terminating the "Misery" series.  Unfortunately for Paul, she has an obsessive and psychotic personality.  She loves the "Misery" series and demands that Paul brings the "Misery" character back to life in the next book and holds Paul captive in the lodge.  Annie is not easily satisfied and even though Paul is sharp and quick-witted he cannot escape her grip.  Now he has to convince Annie to let him live.  In exchange, he would write the "Misery" sequel in a way that would please her.

Kathy Bates was great portraying the complicated, obsessive, psychotic nurse.  I am confident that you'll be glued to the screen for the duration of this heart-stopping psychological thriller.

The Extras

With older movies the extra material tends to be limited because no one knew about DVD.  The DVD includes the collectible booklet (I enjoyed reading the facts about the filming), original theatrical trailer, and teaser trailer.  I strongly recommend reading the section in the booklet under "A Set of Laughs".

Video & Audio

The image quality of this widescreen DVD is pretty good, particularly consider the age of the film.  Colors are accurate and shadow details are nicely captured, especially inside and candlelight scenes.  The Dolby Digital soundtrack is well-balanced and greatly enhances this chilling psychological thriller.

Recommendation

This is another great original psychological thriller based on the Stephen King novel.  You'll be scared stiff of Annie Wilkes in one moment, and laughing in other moments.  It is a great movie for fans of Kathy Bates and James Caan.  Both actors performed exceptionally well.  Fans of Stephen King thrillers will also enjoy this movie.
