Summary: "Lucky Numbers" is a hilarious portrayal of a local TV weatherman's
attempts at raising some quick cash by scheming to win the Pennsylvania's state
lotto with help from his girlfriend, the state lotto ball girl.  The situations are as
side-splitting funny as the characters are unique and memorable.  The success
of this comedy is directly attributed to the great comedic performances of the
   all-star cast.

The Story

Russ Richards (John Travolta) is a local media celebrity in the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  He is the photogenic weatherman and heartthrob of women in Harrisburg.  Even the men of Harrisburg respect him due to his numerous volunteer work as a role model for the local Big Brother chapter.  Though he enjoys his local fame and fortune, he aspires to be a game show host.  As a proprietor of a local snowmobile dealership, he is financially burdened when an unusually mild winter hits the town of Harrisburg.  With his mortgage subjected to foreclosure, Russ is strapped for some positive cash flow.

Desperate to raise some quick cash, he consults his friend, Gig, proprietor of the local gentlemen's club.  There, he reluctantly takes his friends advice to cash in on the dealership's insurance policy by agreeing to take part in a phony burglary.  The burglary unexpectedly goes wrong, and Russ is stuck raising bail money for his accomplices.  To raise cash quickly, Russ resorts to selling his prized red Jaguar convertible.  Still not having learned his lesson, he consults his friend Gig again.  This time, Gig advises him on a scheme to win the Pennsylvania state lotto, which would undoubtedly require help from Russ' girlfriend, Crystal (Lisa Kudrow), his TV station's own lotto-ball girl.  Even though Russ expects much resistance from Crystal, she jumps at the opportunity to become rich.  Together, the three cooks up a fool-proof scheme to win the Pennsylvania state lotto.  We'll leave the rest of the story for you to enjoy.

The characters in "Lucky Numbers" are as unforgettable as they are unique, as wonderfully portrayed by their actors.  This goes equally for Detective Lakewood (Bill Pullman) who comes in much later in the movie.  Though the movie is a little dark in its portrayal of hapless Russ as he struggles with the consequences of his bad decisions, it does have enough silver linings to keep the story enjoyable.

The Extras

The "Lucky Numbers" DVD comes with the following extra material: an audio commentary by director Nora Ephron, exclusive cast & crew interviews, and a theatrical trailer.  The cast & crew interview is the usual, self-promotional featurette, but is nonetheless entertaining.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is well rendered.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective at reproducing the 1980's-themed soundtrack, while the dialogue is crystal clear.
