Summary: "The Living Daylights" is the fifteenth Bond adventure and Timothy
Dalton's first performance in the leading role.  In this episode, Bond is assigned
to assassinate a sniper whom he lets go.  After following the sniper, he discovers
a plot of arms dealing.  This DVD is part of  the James Bond Collection Volume 3
which completes the roll-out of all nineteen Bond movie titles to the DVD-Video
format.  Like the other Special Edition titles in the James Bond series, "The
Living Daylights:  Special Edition" DVD is packed with a number of value-added
features that collectively document the legacy of the Bond adventures.  If you are
a fan of James Bond films (like me), you should be very pleased with this DVD.

The Story

"The Living Daylights" is the fifteenth among the current nineteen Bond adventures, all of which are now available in the DVD-Video format.  The latest James Bond Collection Volume 3 came out on October 17, 2000, of which "The Living Daylights" is a featured title.  (By the way, you can buy the James Bond box sets, or each title in the set individually.)

In this episode, Timothy Dalton makes his debut in playing James Bond character.  Roger Moore retired from the role after making "A View To A Kill".  This time, agent 007 is assigned to assassinate a sniper when the mastermind head of the KGB defects from Russia.  However, when the sniper turns out to be a young and beautiful cellist, Bond hesitates and only fires a warning shot.  Partially intrigued by the attractive sniper, he follows her and soon discovers a plot of arms dealing.

Timothy Dalton gave an awesome debut performance in his first James Bond title role.  He brought a new human quality to the James Bond character.  I was pleasantly surprised and impressed when I learned that Dalton performed a number of his own stunts, particularly in the pre-opening credit scene at Gibraltar.  Continuing the Bond film legacy of beautiful on-location cinematography, "The Living Daylights" was also filmed in Morocco and Austria.

The Extras

As a Special Edition, the The Living Daylights DVD features a number of extra features, including the "Inside The Living Daylights" original documentary, the "Ian Fleming -- 007 Creator" featurette, an audio commentary by director John Glen and various members of the cast and crew, three theatrical trailers, a music video with A-Ha, the "Making-Of" of the music video, and a collectible eight-page "Making-Of" booklet.  I think Timothy Dalton summarized it best when he says, "I've had a few optional extras installed".

The 36-minute "Inside the Living Daylights" original documentary is very entertaining and informative.  It talks about the casting process (particularly how Timothy Dalton got this role), challenges of filming on location, the spectacular stunts, and the dangers of those stunts.  The never-before-seen deleted scene, entitled "The Magic Carpet Ride", is quite funny.  Words cannot do this scene justice, so I won't even try to describe it.  I enjoyed it very much and wish they had included this scene in the original movie.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is balanced.  The dialogue was clear, and wonderful music score effectively engages the viewer in the action and excitement of this film.

Recommendation

For DVD and 007 fans, October 17, 2000 was a milestone.  On this date, all nineteen James Bond movie titles became available on DVD-Video.  The James Bond Collection Volume 3 includes The Living Daylights, as well as five other titles: A View To A Kill, Octopussy, From Russia With Love, Diamonds Are Forever, and You Only Live Twice.  Each title making up the three-volume set is a Special Edition and features unique documentaries of the Bond legacy.  The Living Daylights has always stood out as one of my many favorite Bond episode.  To fellow Bond fans, I will say that this DVD is a worthy addition to your DVD collection.
