The Story
Jackie Chan stars in this 1994 Chinese martial arts action film. It was a huge success in China and is now available in the United States directly on DVD-Video. Jackie Chan is Wong Fei Hung, son the Master Wong Kei-Ying (Ti Lung), returning from a major shopping trip with his father and the hired help. Jackie avoids paying duty taxes on a ginseng root by hiding his package in the suitcase of one of the embassy members. The trouble begins when Master Fu Wen-Chi (Lau Ka Leung) mistakenly takes Fei Hung's package. Now trouble follows the Wongs from both the illegal antique dealer and Master Fu for the package containing the imperial jade stamp. Jackie haphazardly uncovers a plot by foreigners to export some of China's most prized historical artifacts.
Jackie Chan fights the bad buys single-handedly. Well, actually with a few drinks to numb the pain and perfect his Drunken Kung Fu technique. This is one of the very best Jackie Chan movies, foreign or domestic. The martial arts action is among the best I've seen, and the Drunken Kung Fu made me laugh so hard. It's hard to imagine that Drunken Kung Fu is for real. The stunts are incredible, particularly the one with Jackie Chan in the fiery pit towards the end of the movie. Few scenes are done with the assistance of special effects, and the fiery pit is definitely no special effect. Amazing. Just remember to close your mouth when the end credits roll before others see you with your jaw down.
One thing I would like to have seen on this DVD version is the original Chinese language (e.g., Mandarin or Cantonese) with English subtitles and shown as the original Chinese theatrical release. Frequently, Chinese movies are re-edited for the U.S. audience, which is fine, but I would like to see all foreign movies in its original cut as released theatrically in its native land. This version contains U.S. cut, with English dubbed dialog.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is good. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced and effective. The surround sound channels were aggressively mixed, putting the audience in the middle of the action.
