The Story
One afternoon on a New York playground, two best friends, Jake Schram (Ben Stiller) and Brian Finn (Edward Norton), are rescued from a bully by a tomboy, Anna Reilly (Jenna Elfman). Since that fateful day, the three are inseparable until the eight grade when Anna's family has to move to California. Brian is considered a miracle child by his family, and his mother has constantly reminded him of the fact that he is the special gift from God. Thus at a young age, Brian finds his calling to serve God. Jake, on the other hand, becomes a rabbi through his long interest in trading rabbi cards (you know, kind of like baseball cards). Amazingly, the two remains best of friends regardless of their different religions.
One day, Anna calls Brian to let him know that she's coming to New York on an extended work assignment and would like to spend time with him and Jake to catch up on old times. Anna is a workaholic who has not had time for a personal relationship even though she is attractive. Anna has not seen the boys since her family moved away in the eighth grade. The minute Brian and Jake see Anna "Banana" (their pet name for her) at the airport, they both feel an instant physical attraction. Unfortunately, this love triangle can only mean disaster for the trio of friends since childhood. Will Brian and Jake give up their life-long work and devotion to their God to win Anna's love? And if she were to return one of their love, who will be strong enough to accept her final decision? Have faith that this romantic comedy/drama will have you laughing or crying throughout the movie.
The performances by Ben Stiller, Edward Norton, and Jenna Elfman were all consistent and strong, making their characters very believable. However, the chemistry between Ben Stiller and Jenna Elfman was not quite there, if you know what I mean. Amazing were the three children cast members who play Jake, Brian, and Anna when they were in the eighth grade. Their mannerisms and appearances are exactly like their adult characters. I thought the snapshot picture of the trio in eight grade was a composite of the adult actor's childhood pictures, but as it turns out the children actors look exactly like their adult counterparts! Excellent casting.
The ten deleted scenes are entitled "No Bottles Allowed", "Home Videos", "Ash Wednesday", "The Art Gallery", "Jake's Date", "Under Construction", "Anna and Her Cell Phone" (this scene is better than Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally"), "Stay with Me", "Heart to Heart", and "The Rabbis Disagree". Many of the deleted scenes are hilarious, and most offer more insight to the storyline and deeper character study. All of them have the same picture quality as the finished film. The production gag reel is a seven-minute collection of bloopers.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is good. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced and effective, though with minimal use of the surround sound channels.
Recommendation
If you're into touching, bittersweet romantic comedies/dramas, don't miss this movie. A warning is in order though, as with any good chick flick, make sure you have enough tissues handy.
