The Story
During the American Civil War, the North and the South fought with passion for their different beliefs regarding slavery. Young Captain Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) was home after a major battle, when Governor Andrew promoted him to Colonel and asked him to command the first black regiment to fight for the North. Though uncertain with the promotion and opportunity, he nonetheless took the assignment and requested that his childhood friend Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes) help him lead the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. In addition, an African-American childhood friend, Thomas, proudly enlisted in the regiment to fight for freedom.
The three friends soon realized that life in the infantry was not the same as civilian life in Boston. In showing authority over subordinate officers and disciplining of a commander, Colonel Shaw drew some resentment from Forbes and Thomas. In the end, Colonel Shaw won the support of his troops and succeeded in getting his regiment ready for battle. As you might expect, it was not that easy, being the first black regiment. Colonel Shaw had to deal with issues like equal pay and declining morale while his regiment anxiously waited for a real mission that would hopefully bring them "glory". The movie seems to have given careful attention to maintaining the historical truths, as documented in the written letters of real men that were portrayed.
Not only is the film made in epic proportions (with an $18 million budget), the acting performances were also of epic proportion. With an all-star cast that includes Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman (as Sgt. Major Rawlins), and Denzel Washington (as Trip), you cannot go wrong when they are under the direction of Edward Zwick (director of "The Siege", "Courage Under Fire", "Legends of the Fall", and "Shakespeare in Love"). Hats off to Denzel Washington for his performance as he received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Capping it all off is a powerful and emotionally moving musical score by James Horner (of "Titanic" fame).
In addition to the full-length audio commentary by director Edward Zwick, there is a separate picture-in-picture commentary that uses a smaller screen inside of the main movie picture as a video commentary for ten film segments. This feature, which includes interviews with the director Edward Zwick, Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman, is very interesting and filled with amazing facts regarding the American Civil War. For example, folks referred to as Civil War "re-enactors" believe themselves to be the "living historians", as they get together every year to act out the tactics and key moments of the Civil War. These "living historians" actually contributed to the movie as extras, giving the battle sequences a much larger, epic aura.
The 11-minute exclusive featurette "Voices of Glory" features readings of excerpts of letters from the real men who fought in the battle of Fort Wagner. It follows through with issues concerning the men who survived the battle of Fort Wagner. Issues like receiving the same and equal pay as the white soldiers. The 45-minute "The True Story of Glory Continues" featurette, narrated by Morgan Freeman, talks about the African-American soldiers that fought for the cause. This featurette will please even history buffs. Then there is an original featurette that is a seven-minute (typical) self-promotional segment for the film.
There are two deleted scenes entitled "The Apple Picker" and "Crisis of Conscience", with optional director's commentary. These scenes really would not have added much to the movie and were rightfully deleted. There are talents files for director Edward Zwick, Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Cary Elwes. Finally, there are three theatrical trailers for "Glory" and two other Denzel Washington movies, "A Soldier's Story" and "Devil in a Blue Dress".
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent. The colors are accurate and saturated, with good shadow details. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced. The dialogue is clear while the soundtrack effectively engages the viewer.
Recommendation
"Glory" is a sure winner, with awesome performances from Denzel Washington (who won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in this role), Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman, under the direction of Edward Zwick (director of "The Siege", "Courage Under Fire", "Legends of the Fall", and "Shakespeare in Love") and underscored with music from James Horner ("Titanic"). If you're a fan of historical war-time movies or even a casual movie collector, this two-disc Special Edition set is definitely worth buying and is a good value for the price. The movie and the DVD is worthy tribute to the African-American soldiers of the American Civil War.
