Summary: "Frequency" is a terrific edge-of-your-seat thriller.  I was riveted
throughout the entire movie.  As a New Line "Platinum Series™", this DVD
is packed to its seams with really cool extra material.  We gave this DVD
consistent high marks across the board.  Need we say more?  In fact, if you
only buy a handful of DVDs each year, make sure you consider this one.

The Story

John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel) is the son of Frank (Dennis Quaid), a second generation fireman.  Frank was a local hero as a very successful and decorated fireman who rescued a great number of people.  More importantly, Frank is a hero in his son's eyes.  However, when John was only six years old, Frank died in the course of a rescue mission when the fire raged out of control.  Without his father to guide him through the rest of his youth, John grows up with consequences that affects his adult life.

One day, John dusts off his father's old ham radio and tries it out.  Unknowingly at first, John communicates with his father 30 years into the past due to the mysterious "Northern Lights" phenomena caused by strong sun spot activity.  When John realizes that he is speaking with his father 30 years ago, he desperately tries to give his father advice on how to escape from the abandoned warehouse fire that supposedly claims his father's life.  Frank realizes that the man on the other side of the ham radio is in fact his son 30 years into the future and listens to his son's advice and manages to survive the fire.

Now that the past was changed, John soon realizes that the serial killings that he has been investigating has taken a course for the worst, since his father's survival altered the course of history.  Instead of just three victims in the Nightingale serial murders, the victim count is now ten!  And one of them is now John's mother, Julia (Elizabeth Mitchell)!  John desperately convinces his father to help him solve the murders.  With that we'll leave it for you to enjoy the rest of the movie.  Let me just say that I was riveted to the edge of my seat both times, once in the theater and recently again with this DVD.  "Frequency" is a great heart-pounding thriller.  It is topped off with awesome special effects and great performances, particularly those from Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel.

The Extras

As a New Line Home Video "Platinum Series™", the "Frequency" DVD is jammed pack with extras.  Are you ready?  It comes with three audio commentaries (one by director Gregory Hoblit, another with actor Noah Emmerich and writer/producer Toby Emmerich, and an isolated music score with commentary from composer Michael Camen), "The Science and Technology Behind Frequency" original documentary, a "Fact and Trivia" subtitle track, four deleted scenes, the original theatrical trailer, a
"Conceptual and Solar Galleries" featurette, cast and crew information, a DVD-ROM game demo clip.  As if that wasn't enough, there are DVD-ROM features: a script-to-screen feature with dynamic index; a "Lord of the Rings" web browser, wallpaper, and screensaver; a fully playable demo of Sierra Studios "Ground Control" game, and a web link to the original web site.

There are no less than three separate audio commentaries in this DVD.  The first commentary is by director Gregory Hoblit.  Among other things, he talks about the "Northern Lights" quite knowledgeably and how he came to direct this movie.  The next audio commentary is by Noah Emmerich (supporting actor) and Toby Emmerich (co-producer and script writer) discusses various aspects of the movie's production.  In composer Michael Camen's commentary and isolated music score (in full Dolby Digital 5.1), he explains how he became a composer, which instruments he plays, and his philosophy for composing music.  (By the way, Michael Camen wrote the logo music for New Line Cinema.)

"The Science and Technology Behind Frequency" featurette is a very interesting look at ham radio technology, and the natural phenomena of solar flares and "Northern Lights" (i.e., aurora borealis).  It features interviews with some notable scientists and does get somewhat technical.  You can also watch the movie with the "Fact and Trivia" subtitle, which displays scientific, historical and trivia facts as subtitles while you're watching the movie.  This is pretty cool, since you can learn a lot from doing this.

There are four deleted scenes entitled "John Talks to Little Gordo", "Toby Emmerich Cameo", "Frank & Julia Dance", and "Frank & Shep Confrontation".  Unlike the deleted scenes in many DVDs, these scenes feature the finished look of the movie.  The "Conceptual and Solar Galleries" shows the making-of the opening sequence from rough 3-D animation, animation with lighting, complex animation, and the final film.  You can view each phase in sequence or jump between phases on-the-fly using the DVD angle feature.

The script-to-screen feature as part of the DVD-ROM content is pretty cool.  You can watch the movie in a small window with full motion video while browsing through the screenplay in a separate text window.

To summarize it all up, we gave the "Frequency" Platinum Series™ DVD our highest rating (A+) in the "extra material" category.  Need we say more?

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  The shadow details are excellent.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is very well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear, and wonderful music score effectively engages the viewer in the action and thrill of this film.

Recommendation

"Frequency" is a terrific heart-pounding, suspenseful thriller.  And New Line Home Video has packaged it into a superb Platinum Series™ DVD, with a lot of cool extra features.  (Way to go, New Line!)  This movie and its DVD is a very worthy addition to your DVD collection.  It's one of the best we've had the pleasure of reviewing.  "Yahoo!"
