Summary: Life is interesting when friendship and loyalty are found at the most
unexpected place and time.  Two different people, a 16-year old African-American
kid in the Bronx and a reclusive, eccentric award-winning writer, accidentally
meet and become friends.  Their friendship changes one another in the best of
ways.  This movie will renew our belief in the human spirit and inspire goodness
in all of us.  If you're looking for an uplifting and inspirational movie, look no
   further.

The Story

In the most unexpected place, Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown) finds the unexpected friendship and mentorship from the reclusive and eccentric award-winning writer William Forrester (Sean Connery), who is well respected even though he has only published one book.  Unknowingly, Forrester finds comfort and a new meaning to life outside of his apartment through this 16-year old high school student who tries to fit in at a local high school by doing just enough to get by.  Through standard tests, Jamal demonstrates his academic talents and is given a scholarship to the most prestigious prep school in Manhattan, Mailor-Callow.

Jamal must say good bye to his friends and begin a new academic adventure that will change him and his mentor-friend Forrester forever.  At Mailor-Callow, Jamal meets Claire Spence (Anna Paquin) who shows him around the school and helps him adjust to the environment of "double commas" kids (you just have to hear the explanation from Jamal).  In addition, he needs to prove himself to the obnoxious and presumptuous Professor Crawford (F. Murray Abraham).  Jamal's friendship and loyalty will be tested, and life-long lessons are never too late to learn.

The Extras

Bonus material on this DVD includes: "HBO making-of: Finding Forrester" (filmmakers share their inspirations and experiences), "Found: Rob Brown" (how a flier brought the talented Rob Brown to director Van Sant's attention), two deleted choir scenes titled "Lacrymosa" and "Lean On Me" performed by DeWitt Clinton High School chorus, four theatrical trailers ("Finding Forrester", "First Knight", "Fly Away Home", and "To Die For"), a two-page production notes, talent files of Gus Van Sant, Sean Connery, Anna Paquin, and F. Murray Abraham.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, with good shadow details.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective, though with minimal use of the surround sound channels.

Recommendation

Sean Connery and newcomer Rob Brown shine in this movie that beautifully portrays the meaning of friendship and loyalty.  I love this film's message about finding friendship in the most unexpected place and discovering brotherly love and nurturing undiscovered talents.
