make you scream, jump out of your seat, and keep your heart-pounding to the
end.  If you enjoy supernatural horror flicks, this DVD is definitely for you.  As a
New Line Platinum Series™ DVD, "Final Destination" is jam packed with bonus
   material.

The Story

Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) and his classmates are going to France for the fieldtrip of their dreams.  Once on board the Boeing 747 airliner, Alex suffers from a panic attack as he envisions the explosion of the airliner.  Exasperating from his horrific premonition, he and the hot-tempered Carter Horton (Kerr Smith) fights, and seven people from the field trip group get off the plane.  The airliner departs without them as they are detained to a later flight.  As Carter continues his rage at Alex for making him lose half a day in Paris, they witness the shocking explosion of their airliner shortly after take off.

Even though Alex has saved six lives, the survivors and community shut him out due to his ability to see death coming.  They may have a second chance at life, but they can't escape from death.  Death's design haunts the survivors, but Alex quickly figures out the pattern and knows who is next.  But can he single-handedly help his friends survive death's plan a second time?  Of course, we can't give the rest away...  We'll leave it for you to enjoy.  If you're into thrilling supernatural horror flicks, this is your ticket.

The Extras

As a New Line Platinum Series™, the "Final Destination" DVD is jam packed with extra material.  It comes with three audio commentaries (filmmakers' commentary, actors' commentary, and an isolated music score with commentary from composer Shirley Walker), two deleted scenes that tie in with the alternate ending, two original documentaries of test screening and a real life intuitive investigator Pam Coronado, the original theatrical trailer, cast and crew, and an actors and characters match up.  There are DVD-ROM features including a "Death Clock", a psychic game, and animated postcards.

There are no less than three separate audio commentaries in this DVD.  The first commentary is by filmmakers James Wong, Glen Morgan, James Coblentz, and Jeffrey Reddick.  The filmmakers discuss how the movie came about, technical background, computer generated scenes, subliminal evil messages, and actual occurrences throughout the movie.  The next audio commentary with actors Devon Sawa, Kerr Smith, Kristin Cloke, and Chad E. Donella discusses the various aspects of the movie's production.  In composer Shirley Walker's commentary and isolated music score (in full Dolby Digital 5.1), she explains why she has written the score and her use of tone to set the evil doom for the movie.

There are two deleted scenes ("Alternate Love Scene" and "Pregnancy Test") which tie in with the alternate ending.  Unlike the deleted scenes in many DVDs, these scenes feature the finished look of the movie because they were used in sample audience test screenings.  The deleted scenes and the alternate ending that is portrayed is quite compelling.  In the first of two documentaries, the filmmakers and studio executives honestly reveal the process of testing "Final Destination" and how the audience's feedback alter the ending to make the impact that becomes "the must-see movie".  In the second documentary, Pam Coronado gives us a look into her intuitive premonitions which have been helping her and many families of murder victims.

The Death Clock game has a list of questions for the player to answer and receive the estimate death time and date.  The psychic game uses the 25 Zener card test to see if the player has psychic ability.  The Final Destination movie web site has interesting facts about cheating death occurrences.  The script-to-screen feature as part of the DVD-ROM content is pretty cool.  You can watch the movie in a small window with full motion video while browsing through the screenplay and view the storyboards in a separate text window.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  Shadow detail is excellent and the many night scenes benefit from this.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear and the dissonant music score effectively sets the mood and engages the viewer.

Recommendation

"Final Destination" is a very graphic, heart-pounding, edge of your seat supernatural thriller.  New Line Home Video has packaged it into a superb Platinum Series™ DVD, with an exceptional segment on test screenings that explains the featured alternate ending.  If you are into the horror genre and enjoy a good scare, this movie and its DVD is a worthy addition to your DVD collection.
