Summary: "Buddy" is a family adventure film about an eccentric socialite who
loves animals and adopts an orphaned baby gorilla to live with her and her
animal-centric household.  Your entire family will be delighted by Buddy and
the other animals in this adorable animal-themed drama that tops any banana.

The Story

As a wealthy socialite in the 1930's, Gertrude "Trudy" Lintz (Rene Russo) can afford to indulge in her love for animals in the most unusual ways.  With her very patient and understanding husband, Dr. Lintz (Robbie Coltrane), they live with two chimpanzees, Maggie and Joe, along with a host of other animal friends on their huge estate.  As eccentric and demanding as she is wealthy, Trudy dresses her chimps in fine human clothes and teaches them table manners and other refined human behaviors.  She even takes them to movie theaters, to others' astonishment!

When Trudy comes across an orphaned baby gorilla at a Philadelphia zoo, she becomes terribly concerned with the baby gorilla's welfare as no baby gorilla has yet survived in captivity without its mother.  Being the demanding and influential person that she is, she takes the baby gorilla (who she names "Buddy") home to care for him herself.  Miraculously and with the help of her doctor husband, she nourishes the baby and raises him successfully.  Along the way, Trudy instills her ideas of domestication on Buddy, dressing him in fine garments and teaching him to be useful and contributing to the routine household chores.  She even teaches him to have a conscience, to recognize what is right and wrong.

As Buddy physically grows into adolescence, he becomes incredibly large.  Mentally and emotionally, Buddy begins to struggle with his instincts as a gorilla and the civilized behavior that Trudy has taught him.  This struggle plays out when Trudy decides to take him and the chimps to the World's Fair in Chicago.  We'll leave it here so you can enjoy the rest of the movie.  Let's just say though that the animals' natural curiosity drives them to behavior that will tickle your tummies to "banana-splitting" laughter.

If you're an animal lover, your heart will just melt.  All the animals are so adorable, whether they are actually portrayed by live animals, animated puppets, or animatronics.  The magic is created by no other than Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

The Extras

This DVD is quite skimpy on the bonus features as it only includes the following material: a making-of featurette, a collection of theatrical trailers, and talent files.  The making-of featurette is a typical five-minute behind the scenes look of the production of "Buddy".  There are theatrical trailers for "Buddy", "Running Free", "The Adventures of Milo and Otis", "Fly Away Home", "Matilda", and "Stuart Little".  The talent files are for Rene Russo, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, and Caroline Thompson.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, with good shadow detail.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is effective throughout the movie, while the dialogue is clear.
