Summary: "The Bounty" is a gripping tale of mutiny on the high seas.  This drama
is wonderfully acted by a star-studded cast.  Fans of drama, action, or sea-going
adventures will not want to miss this ship.

The Story

Lieutenant William Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) leads a crew on a voyage to Tahiti to take breadfruit plants back for King George in England.  As part of the crew, he hand picks his long-time friend, Fletcher Christian (Mel Gibson).  To make a name for himself, Lt. Bligh leads his crew on the ship "The Bounty" on a voyage to circumnavigate the world.  After 31 days of tremendous hardship in their life-threatening attempts to navigate around Cape Horn, the crew begins to lose faith in their captain.  The weary crew is relieved when Lt. Bligh changes his mind and heads away from Cape Horn and towards the island of Tahiti.

The crew is pleasantly greeted by the very friendly Tahitians.  In the exchange of gifts, the Tahitians agree to grow new breadfruit plants for the crew to take back to King George.  During the many months when the breadfruit plants are growing, the Tahitians literally take the crew in.  The paradise setting and festivities show the crew a better and easier side of life.  Lt. Bligh, on the other hand, grows impatient and becomes disgusted with the crew's conduct and lack of discipline.  During his time on the island, first mate Fletcher Christian falls in love with the Tahitian princess.

Lt. Bligh abruptly forces his crew to prepare for the ship's departure, most of the crew members really want to stay at the Tahitian paradise.  Their desire to stay on the island paradise gives them motivation to take over the ship and unknowingly deal with the consequences of their action.  "The Bounty" is a powerful action adventure film.  The gripping tension is heightened by the exceptional performances of Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Sir Laurence Olivier, and other members of this star-studded cast.

A Note to Parents: Although the MPAA rated this movie as "PG", we believe that it is not suitable for children.  There are many scenes of Tahitians in partial nudity (native dress) and engaged in suggestive sensual acts (ritual dances).  There are also scenes of violence.  We think that you should treat this movie as though it was rated (at least) "PG-13" or more appropriately "R".

The Extras

The only extra material is the original theatrical trailer.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD quite good, considering this film is 16 years old.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  Shadow detail is good.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced.  The dialogue is clear and the musical score effectively engages the viewer.

Recommendation

"The Bounty" is a gripping tale of mutiny on the high seas, featuring awesome performances by a star-studded cast.  Fans of drama, action, or sea-going adventures will not want to miss this ship.
