Summary: Using wordplay between English and Portuguese, Barreto brings to us a
romantic comedy about the relationship of a small group of people, set in Rio de
Janeiro as he knew it as a child.  I particularly enjoyed the multi-ethnicity and its
natural flow of encounters and missed opportunities.  This is a delightful romantic
comedy with a foreign movie twist.

The expression of "it's a small world" truly applies to the situations portrayed in "Bossa Nova".  Set in beautiful Rio de Janeiro, the love lives of a small group are intertwined to produce a great romantic comedy.  The film opens with a suave attorney Pedro Paulo (Antonio Fagundes) trying to get back with his wife, Tania who has been living with her Japanese (yes, Japanese, not Chinese) Tai Chi instructor.  An American English teacher, Mary Ann Simpson (Amy Irving), is a widow and has given up hope of ever finding love again.  One of her student, Nadine, falls in love through the internet with Gary who is actually Trevor (Stephen Tobolowsky) and wants desperately to meet him.  Another student, the handsome Acacio (Alexandre Borges), is a professional soccer player who signs a contract with a British team.  Then there is the young, quick-witted, feisty law intern Sharon (Giovanna Antonelli) who enters the Paulo family by working on Juan's divorce case, Pedro's father.  Using wordplay between English and Portuguese, their encounters create happy, funny, and at times sad moments that made me cherish the characters.

The bonus material include an audio commentary by director Bruno Barreto and actress Amy Irving.  There are four theatrical trailers: "Bossa Nova", "East/West", "Tango", and "Central Park".  There are also talent files of director Bruno Barreto and actress Amy Irving.  An informative making-of featurette is in Portuguese with English subtitles showing how the movie came about and how much fun the filmmakers and casts had making the movie.  The songs are beautifully modernized and arranged well to tie the movie together perfectly and can be seen in the "isolated music score" that allows you to view the movie with just the music soundtrack score.  There is one must-see deleted scene in which Mary Ann sings and dances with Acacio.  Ms. Irving took singing and dancing lessons and I am happy to see the scene included on this DVD version.

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 is well balanced and effective.  The dialogue is clear through out this film.
