Summary: "Body Shots" is a blunt and strikingly candid study of the yuppie single
lifestyle and the issues that they face.  If you can get past the "mature" language
used throughout the movie, you will realize that this film is a brilliant depiction
of the yuppie single lifestyle, as is "American Beauty" for dysfunctional urban
family life.  I don't think everyone will take well to this movie, but those able to
look past the use of "mature" language will find it quite an eye-opener.

The Story

"Body Shots" is a blunt and strikingly candid look at the single lives of eight young urban professionals (that's right, yuppies).  During the day, they are like any other successful professional.  However, when Friday night comes around, they party as hard as they have worked all week.  They club-hop all night, searching for the "perfect" date and living out their fantasies without any inhibition.

However, when Sara (Tara Reid) claims that she has been date-raped by Michael Peronsini (Jerry O'Connell) the lives of these eight yuppies are turned inside-out.  Unfortunately, it's not clear as black and white, since the real truth is clouded by alcohol and drugs.  The alleged date rape becomes a "he said" and "she said" matter of affair.

Just like "American Beauty" is a ground-breaking honest depiction of dysfunctional urban family life, "Body Shots" is a shockingly honest and serious portrayal of the single yuppie lifestyle.  The characters frequently engage the audience by looking directly at the camera and speaking to us.  The language is quite ... how shall we say... "raw" and "mature" in theme.  But having watched the movie, I suppose you could rationalize that it was artistically necessary to portray the lifestyle and sincerity of these characters.  The cinematography and film editing during these sequences show the characters in states of candor which I find refreshingly brilliant.  Once I got past the strong use of "mature" language, I found that "Body Shots" is an unabashed and remarkably candid look at today's most sensitive issues.

Finally, I must credit Tara Reid with her stellar performance in her role as the date rape victim, particularly during her re-telling of the incident in the hospital room.  That was an excellent, well-acted scene.

The Extras

This DVD features both the R-rated and unrated versions through the use of DVD's branching feature.  When you select "play movie" from the main menu, you are presented with the choice of four playback options: R-rated or unrated version, and whether you want widescreen (2.35:1 aspect ratio) or full frame.  The unrated version includes approximately three minutes of previously unseen footage.  Also included is the original theatrical trailer.

Additionally, the DVD features DVD-ROM content that includes the ability to read the screen play while watching the movie, and access to the movie web site.  The script-to-screen DVD-ROM feature is really well done and cool.  You can view the movie in a small window with the script text displayed in an adjacent window.  You can print the script in its entirety or by each chapter.  This is a nice feature.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow details are excellent.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is well balanced.  The dialogue is clear as the soundtrack effectively engages the viewer.

Recommendation

"Body Shots" is an unabashed and remarkably candid portrayal of the wild and fancy free lifestyle of single yuppies.  It tackles some of today's dating scene issues head-on.  If you enjoyed the flavor of "American Beauty", you should give this movie and its DVD a spin.
