Summary: Blue, Periwinkle, and all his friends come together to sing, dance,
play, learn, and interact with your preschooler(s) who will learn that "they
can be anything they want to be" and "not give up".  This movie is great for
preschoolers, but some children as old as eight years old can enjoy and
benefit from the movie.  "Blue's Big Musical Movie" is great entertainment
for families with young children and is a wise investment particularly since
   preschoolers learn through repetition.

The Story

"Blue's Big Musical Movie" follows the same format as its television series, though in a longer feature-length movie.  The trademark Blue's Clues game is included to challenge preschoolers to figure out who will be Blue's singing partner for the "backyard" show.  Through effective use of interactive learning, dancing, singing with the traditional Blue's Clues theme of "they can be anything they want to be" and a new lesson of "not giving up".

In this movie, Blue introduces a new neighborhood friend, Periwinkle, who persistently practices her magic tricks which comes in handy during the neighborhood backyard show.  Many of the Blue's Clues characters, such as Steve, Slippery and Side Table encounter obstacles during their efforts to stage the show, but they never give up.  With determination and teamwork, they eventually produce a successful show for the Blue community.

Since this is a movie, there is more time for the writers to incorporate many lessons for preschoolers.  I like the keyboard lesson with the G-Clef character (featuring the voice talent of Ray Charles).  Steve also emphasizes the importance of planning as they create a list of things to do in preparation for the musical show and follow up to make sure that each item is completed.  The movie provides a great backdrop as a fun and engaging learning experience for preschoolers.

The Extras

The bonus material section contains: "I Can Be Anything That I Want To Be" and "There It Is" music videos, "Backstage at Blue's Clues" featurette, "Who Am I?" game, and Blue's Clues DVD-ROM games (instrument sound matching and water xylophone).

The "Backstage at Blue's Clues" featurette is where the non-green striped shirt Steve introduces the audience to meet Blue's production family.  As parents, we are very impressed with the extensive psychological research that the staff perform for every half-hour TV show, and particularly more so for this movie.  The results shows in the preschoolers and some of the older siblings who have been watching the show.

The "Who Am I?" game can be played on the television with the help of a parent since reading is required to help the preschooler get clues to the characters.  The two DVD-ROM games are Instrument Sound Matching with Blue from episodes 106 and 114, and Water Xylophone with Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper from episode 211 of the weekly show.  If you do not have DVD-ROM access, you may still obtain the games at nickjr.com.

Video & Audio

The image quality of Blue's Big Musical Movie DVD is nice and clear for the lucky little preschoolers who get to watch Blue and his gang in the DVD format.  The music and other audio effects are lively, though use of the Dolby Digital surround sound effects are minimum.

Recommendation

Families with preschoolers who love to interact with "Blue's Clues" every weekday on Nickelodeon should invest in the "Blue's Big Musical Movie".  Chances are, you'll see the difference in your child(ren) after each viewing.  And your precious little one(s) will ask to see it again and again.  Your child(ren) will enjoy singing along with the new catchy tunes of Blue's new songs.
