After a divorce due her inability to bear a child, Maggie O'Connor (Kim Basinger) focuses on her nursing career until her drug-addicted sister Jenna (Angela Bettis) leaves her newborn baby girl, Cody (Holliston Coleman), under her care without any advance warning. Maggie lovingly raises Cody, an autistic child, by herself and is able to get help from a loving Catholic school for the special children.
After six years of raising Cody, Maggie suddenly discovers information about Jenna through a patient, Cherry Post (Christina Ricci), who warns her to protect Cody from imminent danger. Without warning, Jenna returns with her new cult leader husband Eric Stark (Rufus Sewell) and abducts Cody. Now, it is up to Maggie to save Cody who possesses extraordinary powers that the forces of evil want to control. Together with the power of God, Maggie and FBI specialist (Jimmy Smits) fight the Satan-possessed cult to save the life of the innocent girl.
I like the portrayal of the power of good in this film, especially for a movie in this genre. Most of the time, the power of good is belittled in films of this genre, but this movie does it justice. Child actress Holliston Coleman and Kim Basinger depicted their characters exceptionally well.
"Bless The Child" DVD comes with exclusive cast and crew interviews, an audio commentary by director Chuck Russell and visual effects supervisor Joel Hynek, a theatrical trailer, and an original TV spot.
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is very good. The colors are accurate and saturated. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound sounds good throughout the movie.
