Summary: "Bedazzled" is a hilarious comedy about a lonesome geek, played by
Brendan Fraser, who trades his soul to the Devil for seven wishes.  The beautiful
Elizabeth Hurley plays the Devil and grants him each wish.  Though technically
he gets exactly what he wishes for, what he had expected is far from what
becomes of his wishes.  Will he eventually figure out what he really wants, or
will the Devil end up taking his soul?  Brendan Fraser is at his hilarious ever,
while Elizabeth Hurley wows you with her many stunning outfits.  Don't miss out

on this sizzling, "hellariously" funny comedy.

The Story

Brendan Fraser stars as Elliot, a nerd who is ostracized by his co-workers and lives a pretty lonesome life.  Though he is secretly in love with Alison (Frances O'Connor), a co-worker he has known for four years, she doesn't even know he exists until one day Elliot makes a bold attempt to talk to her.  Unable to hold his own in conversation, Elliot loses her interest and she walks away.  His unsympathetic co-workers take the opportunity for a good laugh, at Elliot's expense.  Quietly to himself, Elliot wishes that he would do anything to have her return his love.

Never having looked better, the Devil is played by Elizabeth Hurley.  The beautiful "Princess of Darkness" overhears Elliot's wish and boldly introduces herself as the Devil.  She makes several attempts before Elliot is convinced that she really is the Devil.  Finally, she offers to grant Elliot seven wishes in exchange for his soul once he has lived out his seven wishes.  After much sweet talk and temptation, Elliot gives in and signs the contract with the Devil.  She immediately takes his first wish and gives him exactly what he ask.  Though it is technically what Elliot has wished for, his new situation is not exactly what he had in mind.

After five embarrassing, agonizing, and even life-threatening scenarios, Elliot finally realizes that he has a lemon deal and wants to break the contract with the Devil.  Will Elliot figure it out before it's too late and he loses his soul to the Devil?  "Bedazzled" is a "hellarious" comedy that is not to be missed.  There is great style and substance to this film, and I knew it would be a good comedy from the opening credits when they show the "pop-up" style captions, labeling various people in and around New York City.  Make sure you're not one of those who "talks during movies".

The Extras

Released by Fox Home Entertainment on March 13, 2001, "Bedazzled" is the first DVD-Video to feature NUON enhanced technology.  More on this in a second.  In terms of regular DVD-Video bonus features, this DVD comes with: an audio commentary by director Harold Ramis, an audio commentary by Elizabeth Hurley and producer Trevor Albert, an HBO "Making-Of" documentary, "Basketball sequence" deleted scene, two short sequences of orchestral scoring of the film, "Bedazzling Costume Designs" featurette, a still gallery of concept art and set designs, an original theatrical trailer, and three TV spots.

Now for the NUON enhanced features (which you'll need a NUON-enhanced DVD to reap this content): "Viddies" (a montage of video clips), "Gamma Zooms" (still frame highlights allowing you to study specific still frames in detail, lightening up dark areas of a frame), "Hyper Slides" (a still gallery with contrast to art director's concept), and animated scene selection (chapter selections with full-motion scaled video).  As we do not have one of the two DVD players that currently sports NUON compatibility, I was unable to evaluate the NUON features of "Bedazzled" first hand.  Click here to learn more about NUON.

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is top notch.  The colors are accurate and saturated, while shadow detail is exceptional.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is well balanced and effective, with good use of the surround sound channels.  The soundtrack makes ample use of the low frequency effects (LFE) channel, while the dialogue is crystal clear.  The fact that this DVD is THX digitally mastered should say it all for its quality.

Recommendation

As the name of the movie suggests, I was "Bedazzled" with this movie and its DVD content.  Even without the NUON-enhanced bonus materials, there are plenty of non-NUON bonus features that make this a very collectible DVD.  Whatever you do, don't miss out on this "hellarious" comedy.
