The Story
The idea of beauty pageants has always been a controversial topic. Since she was eight years old, Mona (Minnie Driver) has dreamed about becoming "Miss American Miss" (a fictional beauty pageant portrayed in the movie) and worked hard to achieve her goal. Living with her unaffectionate mother and stepfather, Mona struggles with life with help from her best friend Ruby (Joey Lauren Adams) and Ruby's grandmother. Soon her dream is compromised when Mona discovers that she is pregnant. Ruby finds a way to help Mona out of this predicament, since there is a rule that contestants in the "Miss America Miss" beauty pageant cannot be a mother.
The story portrayed in "Beautiful" hits on a nice concept, but the screenplay has many fallacies. I feel that the character of Mona was not well developed throughout the movie, and especially not towards the end of the movie to enlist empathy from viewers. There was no discussion of Mona's education plan since the competition is for a scholarship. I have to add that Minnie Driver is not young enough to play the role of a beauty pageant contestant, who is generally in the late teens or early twenties. Don't get me wrong. Minnie Driver is a fine actress, but this movie role doesn't allow her to exhibit her fine acting talents.
I
felt the ending was unjustified and not believable when it comes for
Mona to win everyone's hearts when she finally reveals her true
relationship to Vanessa (Hallie Kate Eisenberg). Furthermore, the
scene when news reporter Joyce Adams was rejected by her crew when she
tries to break the news was unfair to that character. I felt more
empathy towards the reporter than I did for Mona. Let's just say
that you won't miss anything if you decide to pass up on this movie.
Video & Audio
The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is good. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is only fair as the surround channel was not frequently used.
Recommendation
You won't miss anything if you decide to pass up on "Beautiful". This movie did not work for me.
