Summary: "The 6th Day" is sleek and cool science-fiction action thriller about
near-instantaneous human cloning.  This is a bone chilling movie, as it provokes
thoughts of human cloning.  Special effects are good, but not extraordinary or
ground-breaking.  In any case, the plot is interesting and deserves at least a rental.
As a Special Edition, "The 6th Day" DVD falls short of my expectation
   in terms of bonus material.

The Story

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this sleek science-fiction action thriller about illegal human cloning.  In the not-too-distant future, cloning is commonplace.  Near-instantaneous cloning of animals is legal and widely practiced, though not without controversy.  RePet is a fictional company that will clone your pet within 3-4 hours.  In the event of a sudden and unexpected death of a loved family pet, parents can replace that family pet, complete with its original memory and personality.  Thanks to revolutionary process of directly recording the thoughts inside the brain using the fiber optic nerve as the transport.  Within hours, a pet can be replaced without the children's knowledge so the children would not have to suffer the emotional trauma of losing a family pet.

For humans, though, cloning is outlawed due to a recent tragic mishap.  Infraction of this law is referred to as "the 6th day" violation (a reference to the Genesis book in the Bible when God made man in His image).  Unbeknownst to the world, the parent company that owns RePet, Replacement Technologies, has perfected human cloning and is secretly cloning humans to achieve the ulterior motives of the corporation.

Schwarzenegger is Adam Gibson, a highly skilled charter aircraft pilot, who comes home one day to find that a clone is inside his home, celebrating his birthday with his family and friends.  Adam must find a way to re-claim his identity and family before the company terminates him to maintain the human cloning secret.  Schwarzenegger takes us on a high tech, futuristic adventure in a world where instantaneous human cloning is possible.  I don't want to ruin the futuristic experience for you, but the Whispercraft™ (since when a fictional aircraft can be trademarked?) is cool, as is the concept of human "blanks" dreadful.  (I feel shivers going up and down my spine.)

The visual special effects is pretty cool, but there's nothing really spectacular or groundbreaking about it.  Pretty standard fare in terms of special effects.  What is interesting, is the thought provocative scenarios of human cloning.  Again, it's downright scary if you ask me.

The Extras

"The 6th Day" Special Edition DVD includes the following bonus material: an isolated music score with commentary by composer Trevor Rabin, a RePet infomercial and TV spot, talent files (for director and principal actors), and theatrical trailers for "The 6th Day", "Final Fantasy", "Hollow Man", and "Gattaca".  Considering this is a Special Edition DVD, it falls short of my expectation in terms of overall content.  Perhaps some cloning of bonus material is in order?

Video & Audio

The image quality of this anamorphic widescreen DVD is excellent.  The colors are accurate and saturated, with good shadow details.  The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound is aggressively mixed, with plenty of surround channel effects, putting the viewer right in the middle of all the action.
